🏡 FOUNDATION FRIDAY #7

Is Your Basement Wall Actually Bowing?

We’ve talked about cracks in basement walls — but sometimes the crack isn’t the biggest warning sign.

It’s the movement of the wall itself.

Outside soil pressure can gradually push a basement wall inward. Because it can happen slowly, homeowners may not notice how much the wall has moved.

🚨 Warning signs to look for:

✔ A horizontal crack running across a block wall
✔ The middle of the wall sitting farther inward than the top or bottom
✔ Stair-step cracking near corners
✔ Blocks or mortar joints that no longer line up
✔ Cracks that continue getting larger
✔ Water entering around the affected area

Here’s an easy homeowner check:

👀 Stand at one end of your basement wall and look straight down its length.

Does it look straight?

Or can you see the center beginning to push inward?

Don’t wait for a wall to become severely bowed before paying attention to it. The amount of movement and the cause of that movement matter when determining what repair may be appropriate.

And remember what we’ve been teaching throughout this series:

💧 Water outside and foundation problems inside can be connected.

That’s why we look at the whole problem — foundation condition, drainage, grading and water management — instead of only covering up the symptom.

💧 WATER WEDNESDAY #6

Does Your Yard Need a Catch Basin — or Something Else?

You’ve got water sitting in the same low spot every time it rains.

So… just put a drain there, right?

Not always.

A catch basin can be a great way to collect surface water, but the most important question is:

👉 Where is that water going after we collect it?

A good drainage system needs more than an inlet. It needs a properly planned route to move that water to a safe outlet.

Depending on the property, the right solution could include:

💧 Catch basins for low areas
💧 Proper grading to encourage natural drainage
💧 Swales to carry surface water
💧 Underground drainage pipe
💧 Downspout drainage
💧 A combination of several solutions

That’s why we don’t believe every wet yard needs the exact same drainage system.

We look at where the water starts, how it moves across the property, and where we can safely send it.

🚨 If you have the same puddles every time it rains, constantly soggy grass, or water collecting near your home, your yard may be telling you something.

Don’t just collect the water.

Give it somewhere to go.

🏡 FOUNDATION FRIDAY #6

How Is Water Getting Into Your Basement?

Finding water on your basement floor doesn’t necessarily tell you where the problem started.

Water can find its way into a basement through several different areas:

💧 Cracks in foundation walls
💧 Where the wall meets the basement floor
💧 Around pipes and other penetrations
💧 Poor exterior drainage or grading
💧 Water collecting against the foundation
💧 Problems with existing foundation drainage

That’s why simply cleaning up the water inside doesn’t solve the problem.

You need to figure out WHY it’s getting there.

Sometimes the solution starts outside with grading or drainage.

Other situations may require excavation, exterior waterproofing, foundation drainage, or repairs to the foundation itself.

That’s also why we believe drainage and foundation work belong together.

We don’t want to simply hide a symptom.

Find the source. Control the water. Fix the problem. Then restore the property.

From excavation and drainage to grading, landscaping and getting the lawn put back together, our goal is to leave you with a finished property — not a construction site.

🚨 BOWING BASEMENT WALL? DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT GETS WORSE. 🚨

Here’s a basement wall we’re working on that had been pushed inward over the years from pressure outside the foundation.

Instead of just covering up the cracks, we’re carefully pushing the wall back toward its proper position and installing steel supports to reinforce it for the future. 💪

A bowing or cracked basement wall isn’t something to ignore. The longer it moves, the bigger—and more expensive—the problem can become.

⚠️ Warning signs to watch for:
• Horizontal cracks
• Bowing or leaning block walls
• Cracks that continue getting wider
• Water leaking through the wall
• Separation around windows or corners

At Moody Excavation & General Services, we can look at the whole problem—from the foundation wall itself to the drainage, grading, and water issues outside that may be causing the pressure in the first place.

💧 WATER WEDNESDAY #5

Is Your Yard Sending Water TOWARD Your House?

You don’t always need a broken pipe or failed drain to have a water problem.

Sometimes, the shape of the ground itself is the problem.

Your property should be graded so rainwater naturally moves away from your home. Over time, settling, landscaping changes, construction, and low spots can change how water travels across your yard.

🚨 After a good rain, watch for:

✔ Water running toward the foundation
✔ Puddles forming beside the house
✔ Low spots that stay soggy
✔ Mulch or stone washing toward the home
✔ Water collecting between neighboring houses
✔ Areas where grass struggles because the ground stays wet

Sometimes underground drainage is the answer.

Other times, proper grading or a swale can move the water naturally without needing a pipe everywhere.

And on some properties, the best solution is a combination of grading, swales, catch basins, downspout drainage, and underground pipe.

There’s no one-size-fits-all drainage system.

The goal is simple: figure out where the water is coming from and give it a safe place to go.

🏡 FOUNDATION FRIDAY #5

Why Is the Ground Around My Foundation Always Wet?

On Water Wednesday, we talked about standing water in the yard.

But the water you can see isn’t always the biggest concern.

If the soil immediately around your home stays saturated, water can remain against the foundation long after the rain has stopped.

🚨 Things to watch for:

✔ Soil that’s constantly wet beside the house
✔ Water collecting near basement walls
✔ Downspouts discharging close to the foundation
✔ Basement dampness or musty areas after rain
✔ Water entering through cracks or along the wall
✔ Foundation cracks that appear to be changing

We’ve talked before about how saturated soil can increase pressure against basement walls.

That’s why foundation repair and drainage often go hand in hand.

Fixing a wall without looking at what’s happening outside may leave part of the problem unresolved.

Our approach is to look at the whole property — foundation, drainage, grading, excavation and, when the work is finished, restoring the yard.

🏡 Don’t just repair the damage. Look for what caused it.

💧 WATER WEDNESDAY #4

Standing Water in Your Yard? Don’t Just Wait for It to Disappear.

After a heavy rain, a little water for a short time isn’t unusual.

But if the same areas of your yard stay underwater or soggy long after the rain stops, your property may be telling you there’s a drainage problem.

🚨 Standing water can be a sign of:

💧 Low spots in your yard
💧 Poor grading
💧 Compacted soil that won’t absorb water
💧 Downspouts discharging in the wrong place
💧 Not enough slope to move water away
💧 A drainage system that isn’t working properly

And standing water isn’t just hard on your grass.

Over time, uncontrolled water can cause muddy yards, erosion, damaged landscaping, mosquitoes, and saturated soil around your foundation.

🏡 Here’s something to try:

After the next heavy rain, take a few pictures of the areas holding water. Then check those same areas 24 hours later.

If you’re constantly seeing water in the same spots, there may be a reason.

Solutions can include proper grading, swales, catch basins, underground drainage, downspout drainage, or sometimes a combination of several methods.

Every property is different. The goal isn’t just to hide the water — it’s to give it somewhere to go.

🏡 FOUNDATION FRIDAY #4

Horizontal vs. Vertical Foundation Cracks — What’s the Difference?

Finding a crack in your basement wall can be concerning — but not every crack tells the same story.

The direction, location, size, and whether the crack is changing can all help indicate what may be happening.

➡️ Horizontal cracks
Horizontal cracking in a basement wall can be a warning sign that outside pressure is pushing against the wall — especially if the wall is also starting to bow inward.

⬆️ Vertical cracks
Vertical cracks can happen for several reasons, including normal movement or settling. They still deserve attention, especially if they’re widening or allowing water into the basement.

🧱 Stair-step cracks
Cracks following the mortar joints of a block wall can sometimes indicate movement or settling in the foundation.

🚨 Pay extra attention if you notice:

✔ A crack getting wider over time
✔ A wall starting to bow or lean
✔ Water coming through the crack
✔ Multiple cracks appearing
✔ Doors or windows becoming difficult to open

The important thing isn’t to panic when you see a crack — it’s to pay attention to whether something is changing.

And remember what we’ve been talking about on Water Wednesday: managing water and drainage around your home can play an important role in protecting your foundation.
