Recently, I’ve made an effort to focus on adding plants to my yard that are either native or have some specific value to local native wildlife.

Last year I planted a native milkweed because of how beneficial it is to Monarch butterflies, both the butterflies and their caterpillars.

I’ve lived in Liberty Lake since 2016 and have seen a ton of swallowtails but never a Monarch.

This morning I was working from my back patio and looked up as a butterfly went by.

I looked down assuming it was going to be a swallowtail but realized this one was orange, not yellow. And it was big.

I jumped up to see if it was what I thought it was.

Sure enough, on the milkweed was a Monarch butterfly.

Amazing!

Time to deadhead the lavender. The hail and rain from a week ago really flattened these plants.

Unfortunately, it bloomed later in the spring so we probably won’t get a second bloom before the first frost.

Gardening for me is art. I love to play with different colors and leaf textures.

Even plants that don’t flower still have a lot to offer when it comes to color and texture.

Another Inland Northwest native- Serviceberry, also known as a Saskatoon.

It’s a shrub that produces fruit that resembles blueberries but a little more tart.

Birds also love them so we’ll have to pick them fast if we want any.

Had a great time working in the native plants booth at the Spokane County Master Gardener Plant Sale this morning.

If you’re in the Spokane area and want to check out (and buy) the great plants that are available you should reserve your shopping slot soon.

They have a ton of veggies, herbs, perennials and more. The native plants will probably be sold out by the end of the day Saturday.

Here’s the link to reserve your slot: https://www.mgfsc.org
