I have started taking a houseplant Masterclass. Summer Raynes Oakes is the instructor. I was never that knowledgeable about tropical plants. This is a great course. Very worth the $179 enrollment fee. Choose your houseplants wisely and learn some new ones.

If you enjoy seeing photos of nature and plants, I'm going to continue the tradition of posting but I am switching to Instagram. If you follow me there, , I will be posting plant and garden and SW travel (when Covid allows this again). It will be similar to the Tower Perennial page, but it will feature my new home in Tucson AZ. I'd welcome you to follow along the adventure. I will very rarely post on this page. alansdesert will be more active and up to date. Instagram is a more popular application now, so I'm just going with that one.

If you follow a year or two for the plants to begin to mature, I think you'll find my new garden is my best effort. Turns out that agaves are more or less the hosta equivalents. I have lots of those, lots of aloes, etc. And we're still in bloom this time of year.

Mina lobata grew bigger in Tucson than Spokane, but bloomed much later, waiting until fall.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

The monsoon season has finally arrived in Tucson. Cool and wet today. Blessed relief from blistering heat.

Happy 4th. This sweet potato is just getting started. They grow here until December. I will have to get out the machete later this summer. I suspect it grows 3 inches a day at least.

Horrible photo in deep shade of a moving animal, but I assure you, in Spokane I never had a jaguar casually walk through my yard. He's over on the edge between my home and the neighbor's house, not in my landscaped courtyard or poolside, but right in the yard nonetheless.

The adeniums are showy, as are the various aloes and euphorbias. This is the 'Christmas Sleigh' Aloe, named for obvious reasons, and like others, will be a good hummingbird plant.

Realized that a shot of an adenium might help clarify the nature of the plant. The caudex (stem) is large and the plant wants full, intense sun, and high heat. Perfect for Tucson. Blooms all summer. Becomes a bonsai-like tree about 3' tall and wide, sometimes a bit more. It is African in origin. I'm going to grow some very rare forms in addition to the ones pictured. Those will take more patience and have to start from scratch (seeds).

Adenium or Desert Rose is a natural bonsai plant that blooms all summer It needs the intense sun and heat found in Tucson, and thrives here. I went shopping when it was 109 degrees and was basically all alone at the nursery for very low risk. I found a very rare peach colored double as well as a good double pink. The garden here in my new home is coming together.

I'm making new friends in Tucson. I took another look around the Barn and Blossom pages now that it is May and nursery life is full swing. I like lots of what I see. Those are fancy chicken coops. But the plants still look good, too. Chessy and the other staff are doing their thing making the plants look great. Their website has room to grow with pages coming. I know some of the plans they are considering. I think this will continue to be a South Hill as well as a regional destination nursery. I could brag about my big purple fountain grass in full bloom, but let's face it, in Z9 they are going to do better than in Spokane. My buddy in the photo likes to hang out by my pool. Cheers, even if you still belong in a mask. Enjoy the summer.
