Our Black Rock Residence, to be built soon by G.S. Fries Construction.

This residence was introduced as a project to push modern design in the iconic Black Rock neighborhood of CDA, ID, while still honoring its rustic appeal and distinct Pacific Northwest character. We worked alongside the team at G.S. Fries Construction and Greg Rowley of Black Rock to develop a residence that speaks to a modern leaning audience.

The result is a home with traditional roof pitches and Scandinavian lines. The density of the stone elements is balanced by massive expanses of glass, while pristine woodwork plays against the natural landscape. The entire project focused on blending two distinctly different styles to create something new.

A throwback to Tokyo, Japan, our last company trip, captured by the talented Finn Baker.

Every year, HDG architecture heads to an architecturally significant city in the off season to explore its culture, streets, and buildings, and spend time together beyond the studio. It’s a tradition that continues to shape our perspective, and 2027 will mark its tenth anniversary.

A new cornerstone in the heart of downtown Post Falls, and a project close to home.
-
It’s been a pleasure to help bring this building to life alongside our client, a thoughtful businesswoman, Post Falls native, and childhood friend of HDG cofounder Josh Hissong. Of the many projects we’ve worked on in downtown Post Falls, this was our first on Spokane Street and remains our largest, bringing 33 apartments and ground floor retail spaces to a blossoming downtown.

We love this spot so much that we’re partnering with Stroom Interiors to open an office in the building, and a few of our team members will be calling the apartments home, too. Helping shape a place with such personal ties makes this project especially meaningful. We’re excited to become part of its daily life and contribute to a growing, walkable downtown.

Since opening, the Garden Bar has settled naturally into the life of the South Hill, becoming a gathering place the neighborhood has made its own.

Our aim, alongside Stroom Interiors and Ball Construction was an addition that felt inseparable from Luna’s long history while offering a quieter, more contemporary counterpoint.

Tucked low into the landscape with 180-degree views of the Pend Oreille River and the Selkirk Mountains, this midcentury-inspired home lets the setting take center stage.
-
The exterior pairs native basalt stone with whitewashed cedar, both sourced within a few miles of the site, for a look that feels timeless and right at home. Above, a butterfly roof floats over a near continuous band of clerestory windows, bringing daylight deep into the core of the house so the lights can stay off during the day. The result is a warm, sunlit interior that’s as efficient as it is beautiful.

Rooted Social House is nearly complete, settling in beautifully on Spokane Street among a growing collection of HDG projects that are helping shape Post Falls’ revitalized downtown.

None of this happens without our clients, who choose to invest in good design and in rebuilding a city we hold close, with work meant to last for generations.

Just up the street, the Nonna mixed-use building will soon be home to our new satellite office, right beside the HDG-designed Miss Dazee’s. It means a great deal to be putting down roots in the community we’re helping build.
