We saved somebody's bait caster rod and reel this morning on County Highway A a few miles north of G in Burnett County. We want to get it back to its rightful owner. It's got some road rash. But still intact it seems. If it's yours, identify it so we can get it back to you. -Cody

Our Story

Around 1968 a company in Cumberland Wisconsin, where my grandfather lived, had bought a gilsonite sealer for their blacktop and were looking for somebody to apply it. My grandfather John and his brother Ron offered to provide that service -having never dealt with any kind of asphalt sealer before. They ended up doing a few driveways that year too, and that was it.

Many years later, in the very late 1970’s John was selling blacktop out of Minong Wisconsin. He eventually ended up getting let go from that job. Without a job, he said to himself “Well, now what do I do?” Well, with the people he had met while selling blacktop he figured he could use those connections. So, he started sealcoating again. He still didn’t really know anything about sealcoating, except what the product was. Very few people had even heard of it at that time. He knew he didn’t want to use gilsonite because it was very slippery and shiny. He had heard that a new product was on the market. A latex sealcoat. The only place he could find it though, was Kmart in Superior, WI. So, John traveled to Superior and bought the whole supply out. With every 5 gallon bucket of the sealer they had he started Seal-Coat Specialties -while at the same time starting another business in sporting goods. John completed some work sealcoating, but didn’t really work the sealcoat business for a few years while building the sporting goods business. When the sporting goods business went under, he eventually went back to sealcoating. The first half of the summer was completed using 5 gallon buckets, then he graduated to 55 gallon barrels -which he hauled two at a time on a small snowmobile trailer usually hitched to the back of a station wagon. He would travel to the Twin Cities in Minnesota, and back to fill those 55 gallon barrels. Everything was hand applied with small brushes.

John had bought multiple different vehicles later on, such as a bread truck he would haul barrels in. He would then dip buckets into the barrels and pour the sealer on the blacktop, and then hand brush it. A small step van, a large step van, and a flatbed -that he could haul 9 barrels of sealcoat on with an extra barrel for water- were all added to his fleet. In the late 80’s early 90’s John got an old milk truck to haul bulk sealer which he says, “That was really something.” and would pump the sealer from there into the barrels. He then built a custom tanker to haul the sealcoat and bring it to the job site, where he would pour it directly on the blacktop and spread it with 3ft brushes and 4ft squeegees. In the very late 90’s early 2000’s he had started to spray the sealcoat. John also served the area as an EMT for many years.

In 1999, the current President of the company, Cody, started working part time at 12 years old. At 18 years old he joined the Unites States Air Force Reserve. Where he became a member of Security Forces, and did presidential security for Presidents Bush and Obama among other assignments. In 2008 he joined a local fire department where he currently serves as the 1st Lieutenant. That year, while serving in the Air Force he also volunteered to deploy to Iraq. 3 months before his deployment, he was involved in a car accident on his way back from a pre-deployment dental exam. He broke his neck and back, and ended up medically discharged from the Air Force a week before the fulfillment of his enlistment. Despite his responsibilities in the Air Force and his recovery, he has been able to work for the company every summer since 1999. In 2017 he bought the company from his grandfather John. He then incorporated the company, and is continuing to grow it. The multiple sealcoat trucks, equipment, and the span of work we do have grown since the beginning. We now do: line striping, crack repair, sealcoating, patching, and debris cleaning. For: Residential, Commercial, Local, Tribal, and County governments. We also exclusively carry Eco-Friendly Sealers. We look forward to meeting you, and serving you.
