ST. BRIGID MIX DOUBLE ANEMONES

Available now.

St. Brigid’s Mix Double Anemones
$12 per bag of 25 corms
$20 per bag of 50 corms
Shipping $7 or actual if combined with other orders. I will happily combine shipping with other orders for roots, seeds and bulbs. Buy more, save in shipping. PM me.

Fall planted anemones are perhaps the easiest and most rewarding flowers to grow.
Anemone Coronoria is generally seen in 2 popular varieties, both very beautiful - the single flowered De Caen mix Anemones and the double St. Brigid’s Mix.

Note -There is also Anemone Blanda, that makes pretty blue-purple daisy like flowers on short stems. They are pretty too, but not as showy as the St. Brigid’s of De Caen types

In previous years. I wasn’t able to get enough of the double St. Brigids Mix, so I mostly had the single De Caen types. This year, I’m offering St. Brigids Mix.

These are the double flowered St. Brigid’s mix, but occasionally they make single Flowers like the De Caen type. In my zone 7A garden, Anemones are a real surprise - they sprout by November/December abd I had one that was trying to make buds in the freezing cold on January last year. Given the general changes in Zones across Virginia, Fall planting seems to be better for all of us now.

Anemone Planting Notes

Best Time to plant
My recommendation for planting times for Anemones is mid-November to mid-December, same as for tulips and daffodils..

Bed Preparation
Prepare the corms by soaking the dried up corms for a 4 hours to overnight in cool tap water. They will swell up to twice or their original size… the corms are irregularly shaped, so don’t worry about which side is up. The corms can go in the ground every which way and they’ll still sprout and flower well.

Planting
Plant the corms 2 inches deep, about 3-4 inches apart for the best display.
That’ll get them started underground and eventually show up above ground when they’re ready. There are tough plants, they only appear delicate.

Fertilizing
Sprinkle any flower fertilizer when the ferny leaves are about 2 inches.

Flowering
Anemones will flower starting mid to late March in the Central and Southern parts of Virginia and in April in North Central and Piedmont. If it’s a warm February expect flowering 2 weeks earlier than normal.

It’s harder to predict blooming times in the highly urbanized parts of Northern Virginia and around sprawling cities like Richmond and Norfolk-Virginia Beach. There are so many ‘heat islands’ - areas that warm up during sunny winter days and influence the environment all around them including parks and gardens in the neighborhood.

After flowering
Anemones can be left in the ground year around if the planting site is perfectly drained, they will go dormant after blooming and become the hard dry corms we started with. If your soil is waterlogged you can dig them up in late June after they finish flowering and leaves die down completely. Then store until late Fall when it is cool again.
——-//—-
Note - I lose more anemone corms because of my own carelessness and my tendency to dig them up accidentally than from rotting. I have good drainage on either side of my driveway.

PEONIES! PEONIES! PEONIES!
11/10/2025

Good evening… I hope everyone had a great day and celebrated our Veteran and their families today. I know many of our gardening group members and their spouses are Veterans and I celebrate you all. Thank you all for your Service to our Nation and our communities.

I was going to make this post last week, but I have been busy shipping Virginia Bluebell ( Mertensia Virginica) roots. I will be shipping it delivering the last of my current orders this week. I’m still taking orders for Virginia Bluebell roots. I will continue to ship until December or I run out.

But now, it’s Peony time.ill be shipping this week on until I run out. Quantities are limited.

Peony planting season is upon us! Now that we’ve had our first hard frost, the ground will cool down sufficiently, and the soil will relax.

If you’ve noticed, at this time, our special Virginia clay is not gunky like in April/May or rock hard concrete like in July/August during the Summer drought. Our soil relaxes in late fall (Oct/Nov) and again in very late Winter (Feb/March). Perfect for digging holes and planting.

Peonies can be planted anytime you can work thr ground so don’t worry too much. Proper depth iis more important… peonies tolerate a wide range of soil and temperatures and are very forgiving.

This year, due to the uncertainty of additional taxes and shipping charges and availability of good roots made me decide to ship only a few varieties, but they are all classic heritage peonies. They have proved themselves over many years and are very reliable.

Peonies blooming season is magical - but unfortunately too short. 10-14 days and they’re done. And invariably, it rains when they are at peak bloom. Mother Nature is jealous of the peony!

One way to get around this is to plant on the North and South sides of the house, the microclimate temperature differences will delay the north planting by a week so you get an extra week of blooms. A better way is to select early season, mid-Season and late Season peonies. They all start blooming a week or two apart overlapping by a week so we can get a full month of peony blooms. My peony roots are marked clearly whether theyre early, mid-season or late bloomers.

These are the peonies I have this year. Just 4 types. Quantities are limited. All of them are $25 each, plus actual Priority Mail shipping. Approx $8 -10.

Ordering is simple- just pm me directly at AJ Frank Gardening and let me know which ones you want. I will ship and provide a tracking number with the total price. No need to pay in advance.

A Pre-Thanksgiving Message.

Good morning.

This morning. I wanted to write a short note about the World Central Kitchen. For an organization that’s been around just a few years, they have had a phenomenal positive effect on the world. They are amazing.

This has been my favorite cause for the past few years, and with each passing year, they have been at every crisis location in the US and abroad, serving hot meals in near impossible conditions. If there was a Nobel Prize for Compassion & Caring, they would deserve it.

Over the years, I have been trying to do my bit by sending them whatever I can; all the proceeds from my sales of peonies, perennials, poppy and cottage garden seeds, vintage garden tools, gardening books, cookbooks and garden prints go to the WCK. Some years are better than others, but every bit helps. There seems to be no let up in natural disasters and wildfires, and the WCK and other organizations like them need all the help they can get.

This Holiday Season will see a lot more of our fellow Americans struggling financially due to circumstances beyond their control. I never write about politics, the difficulties affect every one of our fellow travelers. These are challenging times, but we will get through it. We need to have faith in our ideals and in each other.

What’s always amazed me is that as a people, America is generous to a fault; no matter how hard our own struggles are, people are willing to open their hearts and wallets to share whatever they have with those that have less. An endless outpouring of love and caring to the less fortunate… support to Food banks, good causes of all kinds, shelters for abused people and animals, safe havens for the prosecuted and marginalized.

I am an optimist. It’s a requirement to be a Gardener. Gardening is hope, optimism, hard work, perseverance and patience. These same qualities make the world a better place for all of us. Share yourselves. I love you all.

Thank you for all your support. I’ll be making more posts this weekend.

UPDATE ON VIRGINIA BLUEBELLS & POPPY SEEDS SHIPPING + more
11/02

VIRGINIA BLUEBELLS:
Good morning, I have managed to ship out all but the last 4 orders of Virginia Bluebells ((Mertensia Virginica). I will be shipping the remaining 4 orders before 15 November at the latest. If you haven’t received your order yet, I will reach out to you and let you know when I will ship. I’ve been working through the requests in the order I received them and I’ll do my best to fill all orders this year. (I’m still accepting Virginia Bluebell root orders). My local post office lady goes ‘oh no’ each time I walk in with a armful of shipping boxes)

Virginia bluebells roots can be planted as long as the ground is workable, they are very forgiving, just needs to be planted where they’ll get dappled light, like under a hardwood tree. A light decomposing leaf covering will keep the moisture in. By the way, if you can’t plant the roots immediately, place them in the fridge. They’ll be fine in the fridge door shelves for a month. (I recommend the fridge door so that they’re visible and not forgotten at the ba k of the fridge or crisper tray. Happened to me more than once. 🫣😅

The roots I ship will have growing tips, but don’t worry .. they’re just overeager in the cool Fall weather especially. Plant them normally, in a shallow trench 2 inches deep and they I’ll put out fresh shoots in Spring. The first year they may put out a few flowers, but over time they’ll eatablish a nice little patch and spread especially if they like the spot.

My advice is always to plant them in several spots in groups of 3-5 roots so as to increase the chances that they’ll like the location. If it’s a decent sized root, you can cut it into 2 or more pieces, let the cut ends air dry and callus for a couple of hours and plant. it will take a while to make a new growth bud on the cut pieces, but it will eventually grow. I hesitate in cutting the roots for fear if introducing a fungal infection from the soil, but it can be done.

I’m grateful to all that have let me know that the Virginia bluebell roots they got from me over the past few years are well established and are thriving.

I will take Virginia Bluebell Orders until Thanksgiving.

——//——
SEEDS;
Poppy seeds and cottage garden seeds:

I’ve shipped most of the seed orders as well; 2 more orders to ship; or it’s waiting to go out with the Bluebell roots.

I’ve lots more at this time.. .get them when they’re still time to sow. USPS Ground Advantage is taking 4 -5 days at a minimum.

We will be in the peak poppy seed sowing period soon, from Thanksgiving to New Years Day. That’s the easy way to remember. This year, the Persephone period ( when day length is 10 hrs or less starts on 18 November 2025 and ends on 22 January 2026. I time my poppy sowing for the middle part of the Persephone period… Thanksgiving week to Christmas/New Years week. I divide my seed into 4 and sow them a wwwk apart so they won’t all come to bloom at the same time.

As I look over my garden, I see some poppy volunteers already 2-3 inches tall from self seeding… but the soft green growth is too early and will likely not survive the hard frosts of December. It’s better to sow them in November and December and let them germinate at the right time in late January and February. Giant poppies need about 4 months cool/cold growth period to grow to full size and late winter germinated poppy seedlings seem to be much more frost hardy than early Fall germinated poppy seedlings. Don’t wait until March-April. They’ll germinate, but it gets too warm for growth and they’ll be heat-stunted to 1 -2 ft with small flowers instead of growing 3-5 feet with enormous 4-5 inch flowers.

COMING SOON

PEONIES
I will be posting Peonies this week. I’ll make a separate post. Only 4 types this year, but they are all heritage peonies with classic form and color ranging from Early Season through Mid Season to Late Season.

LADYSLIPPER ORCHIDS
I also have a very limited supply of Ladyslipper Orchids roots with good growth buds. I’ll make a separate post.

They’re one year roots, perfect for establishing a patch. They’ll flower after the 2nd or 3rd year. These are preferable to mature flowering size roots.. they may flower the first year, but the stress on them is high and they tend to die out. Virginia Bluebells are very particular about their growing conditions… they can grow in hardwood and pine woodland, and they need a layer of leafy debris. Like Bluebells, it’s a worthwhile effort to try to re-establish them across Virginia again.

I’m taking orders now, and I’ll plan to ship them out in mid November onwards. PM me for availability please.
———//———
ST. BRIGID ANEMONE MIX CORMS
These are the jewel like double anemones of early Spring. If you like the beautiful single Anemone Decaen mix you will love these. I’ll be posting them this week, now that it’s finally cool enough to plant. I’m shipping now, please PM me.
——-//—-
RANUNCULUS
Limited quantities of large flowered florists ranunculus (mixed colors)

Ranunculus can be planted in late Fall in Richmond and further South/South East, but the rest of us in North, North Central and Piedmont areas have to wait until March to plant them.
I’ll make a separate post with planting information, but please PM me. I’m shipping now.

——-
Thank you for your continued support. As always, proceeds from my plant, root and seed sales go to World Central Kitchen and other good causes. WCK is in Jamaica now, and still operating in Gaza.

UPDATE ON VIRGINIA BLUEBELLS & POPPY SEEDS 10/25/25

Good evening, hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Just wanted to provide a quick update on the Virginia Bluebells. Thank you to everyone who pre-ordered…. I have begun to ship the roots out a week earlier than I had originally planned. I sent out a bunch of packages today via USPS priority mail. I’m working through the requests in the order I received them so please bear with me. I wil do my best to fill all the orders.
I’m still accepting orders, and will continue to do so until mid-November at least.

I will be sending tracking numbers as I ship the packages out.

———//—-
Poppy Seeds (and companion Cottage Garden seeds)
I will be shipping the Poppy seeds packets later this coming week, so everyone will have them at the right time for sowing. Poppies do best when sowed mid November to New Years. In my garden (Spotsylvania County, North Central Virginia, I’ve had great results dividing my seed into 4 parts and sowing each part a week apart from Thanksgiving Weekend to Christmas.

- For North, North Central and Central Virginia sow Mid-November through New Years Day

- For Piedmont and Northwest Virginia, sow mid November through mid January

- For South, Southeast Virginia, Spring comes quicker for you all so sow late October through Thanksgiving

-For far Western reaches of Virginia, you can sow same time as Piedmont. Please see my earlier seed post.
——-//—-
I love our varied Virginia Climate. It’s perfect for so many varieties of annual and perennial flowers… and ALL roses.

Thank you

AJ Frank

Virginia Bluebells

2025 Orders - VIRGINIA BLUEBELLS (Mertensia Virginica). Taking PRE-ORDERS for Virginia Bluebells! I will ship in late October

Bag of 20 roots for $25
Bag of 40 roots for $40

Plus actual shipping approx $7 or $8 for 2 day Priority Mail, it varies by postal zone.
Please message me AJ Frank Gardening or directly Frank, please don’t post requests in comments.

I’ll let you know exact total by text . Live roots need to ship quickly, they should not sit around for days in trucks and warehouses.

Note- shipping rules have changed a bit, the USPS mailing apps require a valid email in addition to the mailing address/zip code.
——-//—-
Good quality Bluebell roots are always in short supply and it’s a struggle to satisfy demand. I always end up with a waiting list and I know that’s disappointing, since the prime planting season only runs from late October through mid-December. (Bluebells can be planted as long as soil can be worked, and they can be successfully planted as late as March for late Spring flowers - however, late Fall is probably the best time since roots have time to get acclimated over the rest of fall pace over Winter.
—-//—
I’m grateful that I’ve been able to ship these precious roots to so many gardeners across Virginia, and that your caring and skill now supports small thriving patches of these lovely natives in your gardens and woodlands.

Hopefully as the patches expand in a few years, you’ll be able to share roots friends and neighbors and the beautiful Bluebell will be as widespread as it once was in Jefferson’s time.

Jefferson mentions Bluebells in his Garden book entry on April 16, 1766 at his boyhood home Shadwell. They were also in his garden at Monticello.
——//—-
The Garden Book entries are as follows (see notebook image)

Shadwell -

April 16 - a bluish colored, funnel formed flower in low grounds in bloom.

Followed by…

May 07 - blue flower in low grounds vanished.
——//—-
Basically - 3 weeks of flowering and then they’re gone, by June, there’s no trace of them above ground. Bluebells are Spring Ephemerals.

Jefferson wasn’t the first to document Bluebells - Mertensia seeds were sent to England by the Reverend Banister in the 1600’s, and In the correspondence ( 1730-1746) of John Custis of Williamsburg with Peter Collinson in London, they are referenced as “Blew Mountain Cowslip”. John Custis may have sent his friend some bluebell roots.

Planting Directions:

1. These native beauties are planted from late October through early March as long as the soil can be worked. However, it’s best to plant them between late October to mid December to allow the roots to settle in before the soil freezes ( they’re shallow planted)

2. They like shady locations in dappled light like in between deciduous trees or at the edge of woodlands with moderate moisture from rainfall. They can withstand drought in Summer.

3. They are hardy, and native to Virginia, so if they like the location, they’ll flourish.

4. I recommend planting Virginia Bluebells in groups of 3-5 roots in different locations to maximize the chance of establishing.

5. Dig a trench about 3 inches deep, lay the root horizontally in the trench with the growth tip tilted slightly up so it’s about 2 inches below the soil surface.

6. Bluebells are ephemeral plants they put up a couple of bright green leaves in early Spring.. then a flowering stalk with rose-lavender buds and then they open to the most beautiful blue. They will last quite a few days if it stays cool. The purplish buds keep opening over a couple of weeks, turning bright blue.

7. Then as it warms up, the green leaves die down completely… LEAVING NO TRACE at all. It’s like you dreamed them. They vanish in the heat of summer…hence Ephemeral. I’d add ethereal to that description.

8. Mark the spot and be careful not to dig nearby. Let the roots stay undisturbed, and they’ll reward you with a clump of plants over time.
——-//—-
These beautiful flowers grew all over Virginia but over the last 50 years loss of woodland, development etc has destroyed their habitat. We can still see stands of bluebells here and there; but it’s worthwhile to try to re-establish small stands in our shade gardens and patches of remaining woodlands.
——//—-
Note - Last Fall, some of you may have noticed I began shipping Virginia Bluebells and woodland plants with the label Fern Creek Naturals. Fern Creek is a real place, located on Lawyers Rd in South Spotsylvania, a couple of miles from the entrance of Lake Anna State Park. Since 2015, I’ve been developing about 13 acres of woodland as a sustainable forest farm. I have been planting the woods and seeding with edible mushroom spawn, ferns etc. My goal is to eventually be able to source ferns, native tree seedlings, some native plants, wildflower and tree seeds, natural forest humus etc, all with an eye towards conservation and long term sustainability. If you’re interested in knowing more about Fern Creek, please reach out to me.

All profits from sales of Woodland plants go towards supporting restoration and conservation efforts, habitat protection and of course, the World Central Kitchen - because hunger is immediate and real. Nothing says ‘we care’ like a hot meal served with a smile.

POPPIES! POPPIES! POPPIES!
….and other cottage garden seeds.

6 October 2025

October is Poppy Seed shipping shipping time!

It’s that time again! I’m shipping seeds, roots and live plants again (it’s finally cool enough). I’ll start shipping 15 October. USPS is still open, thankfully.

I haven’t shipped anything since early June. The unseasonal rains in June and July devastated perennial seedlings ( fungal attacks) and then the drought and heat of July and August made it impossible to ship live plants. But it’s finally October, and it’s dividing, planting and sowing time.

I’ll post live plants and roots in a separate post, this post is already too long 🙃

SEEDS
(Very generous packets as always - compare with ANY seller plus bonus seed packet with each order, my choice)

USPS always jacks up rates in October ahead of the holiday shipping season. It’s terrible

$4 per packet - you pick.
Shipping $3.50 USPS parcel post for up to 5 packets. You will receive a bonus packet with each order(my choice. 🙃)

$20 per bundle of 6 packets - you pick, or just say Poppy bundle or cottage garden bundle

$45 per bundle of 15 packets (you can pick, or simply take one of each. You will receive all the packets plus bonus packets (my choice🙃)
Shipping $8 (USPS Ground Advantage)

- Giant Red Poppy
- Giant Poppy Danish Flag (red/white)
- AJ’s Giant Double Poppy mix
- Breadseed Poppy
- Shirley Poppy- mixed colors
- Flanders Poppy (Memorial Day poppy)
Poppies are probably the best honey bee magnets…. the bees come for the rich pollen)

Cottage Garden Companions for Poppies are (sow October to December)

- Blue Cornflower (Bachelor’s Buttons)
- Nigella ‘Love in a Mist’ (Mrs Jekyll Mix)
- Rocket Larkspurs (Annual Delphinium , aka Delphinium Consolida)
- Lupine Russell Hybrids (Lupinus Polyphyllus)
- Blue Lupine (Lupinus Perennis)
- Cilantro (yes, cilantro… use as a herb, but fall sown cilantro produces large umbels of tiny white flowers in Spring- magnet for tiny native bees)

Seeds Late Winter/Spring Sowing
Sow February - April

- Linaria Northern Lights (ToadFlax) - little bright jewel colored flowers that look like miniature snapdragons.
- Borage (Starflower) - Bee magnets, edible
- Dwarf Sweetpea (plant Feb 16-March 10) - fragrant
- Royal Family Mix Sweetpea ( Feb16- March 10) - fragrant
- Dwarf Sunflower Teddy Bear
- Tetra Snapdragons

My seed bundles make great gifts too, but order early so that the gift recipient can sow seeds at the correct time.

Best time to sow is from mid -October to New Years for poppies and Larkspurs and Nigella.

In my own garden I sow poppies in batches, starting in mid October. Main sowing is between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I divide seeds into 4 batches and sow a week apart, ending on Christmas. The main thing to remember that the seeds need to have soil contact, so please clear mulch and weeds before sowing. We can sow through New Years Day. I know, it’s weird being outside sowing in the dead of Winter. Trust me, it works.!
——-//—-
A Heartfelt Thank you!
Thank you all for your continued support. All proceeds l from my sales of seeds, roots, gardening books, vintage garden tools (they really don’t make ‘em like they used to) and live plants support the World Central Kitchen and school/community gardens. Hunger is real, and I know many gardeners support their Food Banks through donations and growing food in their own gardens as well as Community, Library and Church gardens.

Check out the world Central Kitchen’s mission at wck.org

I live in Spotsylvania County, just south of Fredericksburg, VA . If you live in Fredericksburg or Stafford County, King George or Louisa Counties you can visit me any weekend even during Winter. Gardening season doesn’t end in October/November.. in fact the busiest time of my garden year begins now with bed preparation for next season.

Gardening for good,

LISIANTHUS STARTS AVAILABLE!!!
Good morning! Spring is just around the corner and I’m starting to ship again.

This week onwards , I will be shopping a limited quantity of Lisianthus starts …. As many of you know, these beautiful flowers are finicky to start from seed (and the seeds themselves are horrendously expensive). Once they get going, they are tough plants and will flower in Early Summer and again in Fall with a little care. Getting them through the summer drought needs regular watering.

Right now, I’m shipping the pink and the yellow Lisianthus. I will ship Lavender in early March

Price -

12 starts (plugs) for $15
Shipping $7 ( USPS Priority or Ground Advabtage, 2-3 days)
Quantities are very limited, and these are live place that I can’t ‘hold’.

Best way to grow them… transfer to 3 inch cups or pots with good drain holes , any good potting soil is fine. Keep them in indirect light outside and let them grow out to 4 -5 inches tall and then transfer to larger pots or preferably in the ground. These plants can get to 2 feet, and too heavy… so they will need a light support to prevent toppling.

I will post when Lavender is available. Get the yellow and pink when they’re available.

PM me AJ Frank Gardening or AJ Frank
Thank you.

As always, all proceeds from my plant and seed sales go to charitable causes. I support the World Central Kitchen and school/community gardens but at this time it looks like there are many other causes that are losing funding temporarily or permanently and can use some help. If I decide to support other causes, I will post the details. I cannot do this without your generous support. Thank you.
