We came to the proverbial crossroads after several years of witnessing the practices & consequences of industrial agriculture. The harmful effects of factory farming & our chemical-based conventional agriculture system are leaving a huge burden on public health, as well

as our land & water. As parents, we carry this burden heavily, knowing that we can either leave a legacy for future generations or we can leave a calamity. We made a decision in the late fall of 2010 & began to shift our market; helping our fellow Floridians learn about organic growing methods through workshops & courses on small space gardening & teaching how to use edibles in their existing landscaping. We held classes, open to the public to share subjects like seed starting, composting, planting fruit trees, perennial edibles & other beneficial trees & plants for Florida properties. Ironically, our 14 years of previous business ownership has been in the traditional Florida landscaping industry. Before we shifted focus, we once installed grass & ornamentals that require large amounts of water & other resources. We had freely handed out referrals for chemical fertilizer, pesticides & herbicides. But now, we teach alternatives that build & repair soil, harvest water, produce food & provide habitat for beneficial insects. We began as a lawn & landscape company in the Tampa Bay area 20 years ago. After witnessing many years of hazardous synthetic chemicals, in a petroleum-loaded industry, we decided to start transitioning away from this destructive practice of "maintaining grass". We began sheet-mulching over grass & converting consumption properties into production properties: veggie gardens & food forests. We are proud to be joining nature’s revolution in bringing our food back to the way it was always intended to be grown: without chemicals & without a hefty price tag.

WHAT IF ONE OF THE BEST SUMMER GREENS FOR FLORIDA IS STILL FLYING UNDER THE RADAR?

That’s Surinam Spinach — Talinum fruticosum.

It’s tender, succulent, mild-flavored, fast-growing and incredibly useful in hot-climate gardens.

Before GreenDreams became a nursery filled with rare fruit trees, perennial vegetables, native plants and edible landscapes…

there was Moringa.

🌱 *Moringa oleifera* was one of the very first plants we ever sold.

It helped change the way we thought about landscaping.

Instead of asking:

“What looks good here?”

We started asking:

“WHAT CAN THIS LANDSCAPE ACTUALLY DO?”

Can it feed us?

Can it create habitat?

Moringa answered YES.

🌿 HEAT LOVING LEAFY GREENS 🔥 — DAY 2

🌺 CRANBERRY HIBISCUS + KENAF HIBISCUS

Two edible hibiscus plants.
Two completely different personalities.
One big lesson:

YOUR SUMMER GREENS DO NOT HAVE TO LOOK LIKE LETTUCE.

🌺 CRANBERRY HIBISCUS is the showstopper.

Its deep burgundy foliage looks ornamental, but the young leaves are edible with a bright, tart flavor similar to lemon or sorrel.

It adds:

🌺 Color
🥗 Food
🦋 Pollinator value
🏡 Landscape structure

🌿 KENAF is the conversation starter.

Its deeply lobed leaves are VERY recognizable from across the yard. 😂

Years ago, we grew Kenaf along the fence at our old property—and a concerned neighbor called code enforcement because they thought we were growing something else.

The surprise?

Kenaf (*Hibiscus cannabinus*) offers much more than unusual foliage:
