Let’s talk about prepping!
What is prepping? Prepping is something a little different for everybody. Some people keep a stock of non perishable food / shelf stable food in case of a short term power outage or unavailability of groceries when they are needed. Others prep for SHTF / end of the world / zombie apocalypse. 🫣. In short, prepping is keeping food, emergency supplies, etc… in order to meet the basic needs of your family when it is needed.
My family lives close to the gulf coast and hurricanes are a certainty here. We fall somewhere in the middle of the prepping spectrum. These are some things we keep on hand to meet our needs anytime groceries, medical supplies, power, are not available:
•Shelf stable food
- Canned goods
(home canned or store bought)
- Convenience foods
(Crackers, pancake mix,
Canned meats, pickled
veggies, peanut butter)
- Pantry staple items
(Flour, cornmeal, beans, rice,
Pasta, fats/oils, salt, sugar,
baking soda/powder, dry or
canned milk, etc…)
• Secondary power source
- generator (keep backup fuel on
on hand) to keep freezer running
- solar power cells for keeping
phones, radios, flashlights,
lanterns, and electronics
charged.
- wood chopped and stacked to
use for heating or cooking
- propane for grill or camp stove
in order to prepare meals
•Backup water supply - for human consumption, animal consumption, washing/cleaning, personal hygiene, and flushing toilets if needed. Under this heading I will also add wet wipes. They are so handy for personal hygiene when electricity is off and water is off or not safe. We also have a water filter in case there is water contamination.
• First Aid / Emergency medical supplies. We keep any RX meds, OTC meds that could be needed, as well as bandages, antibacterial ointment, etc..
We are not hard-core “preppers”, but we try to have what we need in case something happens. Everyone is different ♥️
