Free Security Checklist: Is Your Home or Business Truly Protected?

Why This Matters

Most break-ins don’t happen because criminals are highly skilled, they happen because of simple, overlooked vulnerabilities.

This checklist will help you quickly identify weak spots in your home or business security before they become real problems.

Section 1: Exterior Security (First Line of Defense)

✔ Are all entry points (doors/windows) clearly visible from the street or monitored?

✔ Do you have adequate outdoor lighting (especially motion lights)?

✔ Are there blind spots around your property where someone could hide?

✔ Are security cameras covering key areas (front door, driveway, back entrance)?

✔ Are camera systems clearly visible (deterrent effect)?

Section 2: Entry Points (Most Common Weak Spots)

✔ Are all doors solid core or metal (not hollow)?

✔ Do doors have deadbolts installed?

✔ Are strike plates reinforced with longer screws?

✔ Are windows secured with locks or sensors?

✔ Do you monitor secondary entry points (garage, side doors)?

Section 3: Surveillance & Monitoring

✔ Do you have a security system installed?

✔ Are you receiving alerts in real time (mobile notifications)?

✔ Are cameras recording and storing footage properly?

✔ Can you access your system remotely?

✔ Is your system professionally monitored or self-monitored?

Section 4: Risk Awareness

✔ Have you experienced suspicious activity in your area recently?

✔ Do you know the most common way someone could access your property?

✔ Have you had a recent move, remodel, or business change?

✔ Do employees/family members understand security basics?

Section 5: Common Mistakes People Make

❌ Relying only on cameras (no alarms or alerts)

❌ Leaving blind spots uncovered

❌ No regular testing of the system

Have you ever thought or heard someone say "I have a dog, I don't need a security system"

May is National Bike Month, so here are a few tips to help you protect your bike during quick stops.

○ Use a quality U-Lock (not just a cable)
○ Lock both the frame and wheels
○ Park in well-lit, visible areas
● Where possible, park in view of a security camera if your bike will be out of your sight for even a couple of minutes

IYKYK, this is one of my favorite holidays because it reminds me to enjoy some great Mexican food.

But more importantly it commemorates Mexico's victory over the French army at the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

France invaded Mexico in 1862, and the much smaller Mexican army defeated the French forces even though they were less equipped to do so.

This became a symbol of Mexican resilience, unity and resistance against foreign control.

So as you enjoy this holiday, remember it's not just about the food or parties, it's also our reminder that staying resilient can help us overcome what others might believe to be impossible.
