Clara Belle Drisdale Williams (1885-1993) is celebrated as the first African-American graduate of New Mexico State University (NMSU). Her journey to achieve this milestone was fraught with significant challenges, including racial discrimination that forced her to take notes from the hallway as many professors denied her access to their classrooms. Furthermore, during her graduation ceremony, she was not allowed to walk with her class to receive her diploma, highlighting the obstacles she faced during her education. In 1917, Clara married Jasper Williams, and together they raised three sons, all of whom went on to become physicians. Clara''s dedication to education was unwavering; she taught Black students during the day and offered home economics lessons to their parents, many of whom were former slaves, in the evenings.Clara''s resilience and contributions to education did not go unnoticed. In 1961, NMSU honored her by naming a street on campus after her. The recognition continued when, in 2005, the university renamed the English department building to Clara Belle Williams Hall. Additionally, in 1980, NMSU awarded her an honorary doctorate of laws degree and issued a formal apology for the mistreatment she endured as a student.
Clara Belle Williams lived a remarkable life, passing away at the age of 108, and her legacy continues to inspire generations.

GZA may be the only rapper who lectures about quantum physics at Ivy League institutions including Harvard and MIT. That honor stems from his acknowledged role as “the Genius”- “Voltron head” of hip-hop''s most notorious group Wu-Tang Clan.

“Last time I was down South, I walked into this restaurant. This white waitress came up to me and said, ''We don''t serve colored people here.'' I said, ''That''s all right, I don''t eat colored people.Bring me a whole fried chicken.'' About that time, these three cousins came in. You know the ones I mean, Ku, Klux and Klan. They said, ''Boy, we''re givin'' you fair warnin. Anything you do to that chicken, we''re gonna do to you.''"So I put down my knife and fork, picked up that chicken, and kissed it.” - Dick Gregory, comedian and activist (Oct. 12, 1932 - Aug. 19, 2017)
