Oakheart Orchids

Oakheart Orchids Orchids made simple and accessible for all. That's the mission of Oakheart Orchids. Anyone can grow and enjoy these amazing, resilient plants!

The secret is finding the right orchid varieties and care requirements tailored for your environment. Contrary to popular belief, a wide range of orchids make beautiful and easy to care for houseplants. I personally grow hundreds of orchid varieties entirely in a home environment. When I first started collecting orchids in my teens, I was frequently frustrated by the lack of growing information fo

r people like me and found that much of the conventional wisdom on orchids based in greenhouse care just didn't work for my plants, my schedule, or my budget. Over time, I found what works for me in my environment. Now I want to help others do the same. I created Oakheart Orchids for my fellow home growers. I specialize in orchid varieties best suited for raising as houseplants and sharing growing tips and tricks to help these orchids thrive in our homes and workplaces. I'm passionate about tearing down the reputation of "finicky" orchids and the barriers that prevent so many plant lovers from embracing the extraordinary orchid family. Let's keep it simple, keep it fun, and grow together! And if you do have a greenhouse or elaborate growing set-up to raise orchids? Rock on, and know that you are welcome here, too. Countless orchid varieties and a wealth of information is already out there for you. But I bet I can still introduce you to more cultivars to add to your plant collection. As the largest flowering plant family in the world, native to every habitat on the planet except glaciers, with over 28,000 species, an estimated 100,000-200,000 hybrids, and still counting, there are orchid varieties for everyone. My family keeps telling me I'll never collect them all, but that's never stopped me from trying!

I've never been great at marking milestones - I'd forget my own birthday most years if my friends and family didn't remind me! So, I suppose it's no surprise that I realized only belatedly that this week was the official 1 year anniversary of Oakheart Orchids.

On paper, Oakheart is my baby, but in practice, Oakheart definitely takes a village. There's a reason I always use the plural on my business pages (we, our, and so forth). This business would not exist, much less have grown so rapidly, without an amazing team of family and friends graciously giving not only encouragement and advice, but also sharing their amazing talents, precious time, and a truly staggering amount of labor! And all of that would have been for naught without the mind-blowing support of our local plant community, orchid societies and clubs throughout the region, and countless fellow plant lovers from near and far who have shared the joys of growing with us.

So it is with profound gratitude, I say, congratulations on OUR anniversary!!

Happy anniversary, and happy growing!

- Regan

🌸 New plant offerings! 🌸

Did you know Oakheart also specializes in Gesneriads - the plant family that includes African Violets, Lipstick Plants, Goldfish Plants, and so much more?

It's a family tradition! At the peak, Marsha's inventory included thousands of registered African Violets, as well as sinningia, primulina, petrocosmia, episcia, and more. Regan has mostly focused on the trailing types, like aeschynanthus (lipstick plants), nematanthus (gold fish plants), codonanthe, and xcondonathus. She also used to collect streptocarpus. Now, we're bringing that expertise to Oakheart.

Check out our great selection of gesnariads this Saturday at the Summer Sale Event! Regan is offering up her props of some unique blooming trailers, including truly rare and unusual species and hybrids. Marsha is bringing in a selection of her African Violet babies. Both will be on hand to answer gesnariads questions and show you how easy and spectacular these varieties can be at home!

💫 Introducing Pothos 'Oakheart White'💫

Regan's very own cultivar, and the product of over 20 years of selective propagation!

This is the story of 'Oakheart White', as told by Regan:
Sometime back in the early aughts, I picked up a little pothos at a local garden center that had a small amount of white variegation to it for my first apartment. This was back when pothos were commonly labeled "philodendron," with no cultivar names, and one of the cheapest houseplants you could buy (it was probably like $2-3 then). Yes, I am old. 😞
The little thing grew like crazy. Each time it got too large or I needed to make it more portable for one of my frequent moves back then, I would take cuttings of a few pieces that had the best variegation and restart the plant from there. Eventually, I began getting plants with heavier and heavier variegation, so I kept selectively propagating. Every few years, I would reduce it to a few choice cuttings. Over successive props, I got less and less green and better and better white and cream tones until it reached it's current form. I've kept chopping for size and to confirm stability, and for many years now, it has consistently grown with every leaf and prop baby heavily variegated.
I didn't set out to create my own cultivar, it was just the result of space constraints and me playing with my plants for fun. It wasn't until several friends more versed in houseplant trends recently clued me in that I realized my little experiment was desirable to anyone else, or that I'd inadvertently created a 'Snow Queen' rival long before I'd ever heard of her! 😂 I just live in my little orchid world doing mostly orchid things, ok?! 🤦‍♀️

💫Best of all, this beauty is just as easy and low maintenance to grow as standard pothos! Requiring only medium to low light, we've grown this one in offices, bathrooms, kitchen counters, the tops of bookcases, etc. - she's not picky.

🪴Ready to add this original cultivar to your collection? From now through the Summer Sale Event this Saturday, 7/18, 4" pots of Pothos 'Oakheart White' are only $10!

👻👻 Ghost Orchids are Here!!!👻👻

Dendrophylax lindenii, the famous Ghost Orchid, native to Florida and Cuba, has arrived in the Ozarks - by way of Southeast Asia (sourced from a tissue-culture lab 🧪, not poaching 🚫)! These babies are more traveled than me! lol

Per my previous post, this species has a reputation for being challenging to grow. Please, please, please, research this orchid's care needs and seasonal cycle before ordering. This one is not recommended for beginners.

As expected, these are babies - not long out of flask and basically acclimated compot equivalent. They arrived tied to pine mounts. This is a temporary mount, for shipping protection only; the plants should not be grown on pine for long. If you would like to do your own mount or other growing medium of your choice, plants can be purchased As-is for $25 each. If you would like me to mount for you onto cork bark, the price is $30 each.

⏱️This is a limited time, limited supply special order!
