The composting confessional: it's okay to not be perfect. In fact, it's better to just stick to the basics and know what helps or hinders the pile. I'm a fan of adding fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds, dry leaves, cardboard, and plant trimmings - it's a good starting point. Crushing eggshells is my composting trick - they break down faster, and I'm all about efficiency. Don't forget the greens and browns or your pile will turn on you. Wet kitchen scraps need dry material, or it's game over. Greasy foods, meat, and pet waste are the composting equivalent of toxic waste - avoid them. Citrus and onions in moderation are fine, but don't overdo it. And if your plant's got a disease, it's best to leave it out unless your compost pile's a fiery inferno. Composting's not that hard - keep it simple, keep it balanced, and you'll figure it out as you go.
