To ensure your mower is well-prepared for winter storage and ready for use in the spring, follow these recommendations:
1. Clean the Mower: Before storing, thoroughly clean your mower to remove grass, dirt, and debris. This prevents rust and keeps the mower in good condition.
2. Drain or Stabilize Fuel: If your mower runs on gasoline, drain the fuel tank to prevent old fuel from damaging the engine. Alternatively, you can add a fuel stabilizer to the tank, which allows the fuel to remain in the mower without going stale.
3. Change the Oil: To remove any accumulated contaminants over the mowing season. Fresh oil will help protect the engine during storage.
4. Replace or Clean Air Filter: A clean air filter will ensure your mower starts smoothly when you remove it from storage. Replace or clean it as needed.
5. Sharpen the Blades: Sharpening the mower blades before storage means you'll have a ready-to-use, efficient mower in the spring.
6. Check and Tighten Fasteners: Inspect all nuts, bolts, and fasteners, tightening any that may have loosened over time.
7. Lubricate Moving Parts: Apply a light coat of oil or lubricant to any moving parts to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
8. Inspect and Charge the Battery: For electric mowers, inspect the battery, clean the terminals, and fully charge it. Please make sure to store the battery in a cool, dry place.
9. Store in a Dry, Protected Area: Store your mower in a dry place like a garage or shed to protect it from the elements.
10. Cover the Mower: Use a mower cover or a tarp to protect it from dust and moisture.
By following these steps, you can help extend the life of your mower and avoid any start-up issues after winter storage.
