Forecast for Foothills Festival: Fair and Fun
The 8th annual celebration of our local natural world is happening on River Ridge Ranch in Springville on Saturday, November 1, from Noon – 5 PM. Expect temperature in the low 80s, along with an abundance of smiles and laughter!
The Foothills Festival combines music, arts, food, activities, education with a chance to visit a private, protected ranch.
River Ridge spans 722 acres, offering full protection, and is surrounded by the vast Sequoia National Forest and the Giant Sequoia National Monument, which together cover 1.3 million acres. The North Fork Tule River runs through the site, which is home to bear, deer, lion, coyote, gray fox, badger, ring-tail cat, raccoon, skunk and over a one hundred species of birds. You can hike from 1,000’ to 3,000’ at the “Ridge” on a 4.5-mile trail; at the top you will find magnificent views of giant sequoia groves and the valley floor. If you want to hike the mountain, bring water, sunscreen, boots, hat and expect to spend 3 hours roundtrip. As you walk, you will pass from riparian corridor, through old fields, blue oak woodland, and into chaparral.
Down below, in The Compound, The Throwback Kids band will be playing all afternoon, Route 65 Grill will offer their lovingly crafted tacos and aguas frescas for sale, numerous agencies and organizations will have tables and can answer your questions about native plants; you’ll be able to purchase native plants for your home, too (Alta Peak chapter of the California Native Plants Society), birds (Tulare County Audubon Society), land conservation (Sequoia Riverlands Trust), and gardening (University of California Cooperative Extension).
Stop by the Long Beach State table and learn about their research on River Ridge and their programs in Geography, Environmental Science and Policy, and GIS. Who knows, they might let you touch a drone?
And this year we welcome Tulare County Deep Roots/Foodlink to the ranch.
Around the 2,000 sq. ft. Pavilion, a selected group of artists will be offering metal sculpture, clothing, elderberry handmade flutes, fine art, wildlife carvings, pottery, and handcrafted knitted and woven wear.
