The Saturday Evening Native Tongue- Your Field Guide to Plant Slang

Prickly Pear- An odd situation that could get you in trouble. When you've been working in the sun all day and you're too grumpy to talk to anyone.

Golden Ragwort (Packera aurea)
At one point in time Americans used Golden Ragwort roots and leaves for childbirth complications, lung ailments, bowel issues, and as a diuretic to help cause urination. However, it can be toxic and has caused problems with the female reproductive tract and the speed of childbirth. Also, there are poisonous parts of the Golden Ragwort. It can get as tall as 12 to 24 inches tall and spread 12 to 18 inches. Golden Ragwort does best in wet soil. It can be used for ground cover and bees like it. It needs partial shade or full sun. Bees, flies, and beetles use its nectar. It also attracts butterflies. It is a deer- and rabbit-resistant plant.

Native Plant of the Week:
Virginia Bluebell (Mertensia virginica)

Be on the lookout for this lovely friend coming up now! The name of this wildflower comes from the blue terminals that look like hanging bells the color of a clear sky. The plant comes out in early spring and then goes dormant in mid-summer. It’s a great plant for a shade garden. When butterflies gather nectar, they pollinate the bluebell in the process. They usually grow up to two feet tall. Bluebells grow all throughout Missouri except the northwest part of the state.
