“Aging in Place”
WHAT…WHY…WHEN
By Deb Bokkamper, ASID/CAPS

Insurance companies, investment consultants, doctors and even our families are talking about Mom and Dad: you should start thinking about “aging in place”. Ok, but, we have questions.
• What is “aging in place”? Answer: making your home safe, functional and beautiful
so, one can stay in their home as they age.
• Why do I need to stay in my home? Answer: it is most cost effective to live in your home, rather than a retirement/senior living facility at astronomical pricing…but also, statistically, one lives healthier, happier and longer in their own homes.
• When would I need to prepare for “aging in place”? Answer: need to assess your present health conditions and any past family historical health factors that may occur to you in the near future. Also, evaluate your living conditions presently…is there need to rid of some of your stuff or your children’s?
• What are some first steps to make my home safe and functional?
Answer: make sure doorways and hallways are at least 36” wide for easy access if a wheelchair should be needed in the future
Position illuminated large button on/off light switches in locations that can be reached from a wheelchair. New LED lighting is brighter and saves energy.
Be cautious of flooring, because it should not be slippery or hard in case of falls and carpet should be short weave as to not trip up a walker but has ease for a wheelchair.
In the bathroom, install a zero-threshold shower with a bench…this helps to eliminate the possibility of falling , yet provides easy access for wheelchairs or walkers.
Install grab bars; even if there is not a present need, make sure they can be anchored properly in the wall for future use…also, do not forget grab bars around the toilet and make the toilet have a higher seat, so it easy to sit down and stand up.
So, don’t be a fall or a hospital statistic…have a safe, functional, yet beautiful home you and your family will have peace of mind and you will live in your home for years to come.

Our Story

Interior design for all ages, at all life stages...it all started when I was a physical education and health teacher from University of Missouri-Columbia with the emphasis of safety in sports.

As the world opened up new opportunities, I developed my hobby of interior design as an actual profession. I enjoyed residential interior design for over 20 some years. As life would open another common situation amongst “baby boomers”, I turned into a care giver for my aging parents. They downsized and lived in a ranch style house that seemed like the “correct” way of living in their golden years; BUT, something was always puzzling me about how challenging it was in the bathrooms, kitchen and bedrooms.

Thusly, I remembered the section of design curriculum as universal design. I went back through my notes, researched on statistics of the market of aging, and decided this was a way that I could take my knowledge from being a physical education and health teacher and apply it to residential, interior design.

I started Ageless Design...a consult that designs new construction and renovation of present construction to make homes safe and functional for people to “age in place”. I am a resource of universal designed product, such as functional flooring, safety in bathrooms from zero rise showers, grab bars, kitchen appliances, etc. and services from home care, transportation, assisting in daily chores, decluttering, etc... I am nationally certified as an interior designer, certification number 22834; professional practicing member of the American Society of Interior Designers number 1499795; and I have a Certified Aging in Place Specialist designation from the National Home Builders Assocation number 169316.
