DECK CARE
If you have an existing deck, proper care and maintenance is important to getting the maximum life from your structure. Some recommended tasks to lengthen the life of your deck are below based on the type of deck.
1. If your deck has a wood frame and wood decking, regular maintenance is necessary for the deck life. To start, clean debris from the deck surface regularly (maybe monthly). This can be done with a broom or a leaf blower. The goal is to keep the surface clean, but also to clean the leaves, twigs, and other debris from the gaps between the deck boards. Leaves and twigs can trap water causing deck boards or joists to rot or decay.
2. If you have planters on the deck, make sure they are elevated off the deck surface or do not drain directly onto the deck surface. Moisture trapped under the planter can cause wood framing or decking to rot and decay. Moving the planters regularly also helps prevent damage from moisture.
3. It is good practice to wash the decking a couple of times a year. Early spring and late summer or early fall are good times. This can be done with water. Targeting sap, bird droppings, and food spills is the goal. If you use a power washer do not get too close to the deck surface.
4. If you have a cedar or treated deck, good practice is to seal or stain the entire deck. By taking this step every two years you can prolong the life of your deck. Clean the deck using the recommendations above. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. Select a clear or tinted sealer that will protect your wood decking from water pe*******on. As a deck ages, it may be necessary to do this step annually.
5. If your deck has composite or pvc decking, it may be necessary to do steps 1 and 3 above. While the dirt and debris will not have the same effect on composite decking as it will on wood decking, cleaning it a couple of times a year keeps it looking fresher.
