My son with special needs helped plant these as part of OT we do at home, so they were planted with love!

First big tomato of the season! This is the Bread and Salt variety, an oxheart-type from Eastern Europe. It’s large enough to make the kind of sandwich you have to eat leaning over the kitchen sink. It’s dense and meaty with small cavities and few seeds. I dressed up my sandwich with pickled cucumbers from the garden. Good eats!

Cukes, zukes, and squash are coming in hot! I’m particularly pleased with the Gelber Englischer Custard squash (the yellow cupcake-looking beauties). They have a lovely buttery squash flavor and are tasty grated on fresh lettuce salads. These plants are normally better suited for the Pacific Northwest; however, I thought I would give them a go this year. They’ve grown so well, even with a couple of weeks of high temps, that I will be selling the plants next spring.

First okra of the season is coming in! These are the Candle Fire and Louisiana Green Velvet varieties. Pardon me while I stand longingly in front of the microwave for 15 seconds, salt shaker at the ready. It’s interesting how the red fades and a green hue presents as they cook.

When Connor, Peach, and I took Lady Lily Lego (aka Garden Dawg III) in a few months ago, she thought it was a luxury retirement ranch. Ends up, she was being hired on in a supervisory role for Weeds N Worms. Those were the eyes of boss who was hoping it would rain today. 😆
