The bermuda recovery is moving along nicely. The plugs are humming and those areas will be back looking like the rest of the lawn in no time.
If you didn't see my previous post about it, here's what happened. This last winter in areas of my lawn that don't drain well, the IC bermuda dealt with winter kill. Unlike winter of 23-24, that was colder with less precipitation, winter of 24-25 had a lot more precipitation during the freeze thaw cycles coming out of winter and all of the areas that don't drain well were really late to green up or died off. As a whole this 4500 sqft area of IronCutter bermuda came out of dormancy great as it did in spring of 2024.
Recovery has taken a little longer to really get into gear due to the monsoon amounts of rain we were getting throughout spring as well as how cool it was all the way into June.
Here's some things I've learned.
1.)From the wise words of Kurt Cobain, "Nature is a w***e." In other words, Mother Nature is always in control.
2.)Now that I've been on the receiving end of my tall fescue getting decimated by fungus a few years ago and now bermuda damaged by winter kill, I can say both situations are frustrating and like most things in turf management, require lots of patience, work, and trusting the process. However the recovery with bermuda has been more straightforward with a high likelihood of success. Recovery in these situations typically consists of: plugging or sprigging, mowing frequent, and small but frequent apps of N.
3.)Each season in the lawn for any grass type is going to be a little different, especially in the Midwest. Some seasons will have little to no setbacks and others can be troublesome. It's a journey and a learning experience every season.
Cheers and I hope you all are having a great season! π»
