My mom passed on yesterday morning into the arms of her savior Jesus. She went very peacefully and has her heavenly body and mind now. For those that don't know, she was living with on set dementia for the last 6 months. She lived a long full life and left this world at 91. She will be missed by all of her family but we are glad to know we will see her one day. This is a copy of her obituary.
Blanche Ellen Odom Wells was born in 1932 to Margaret and John Odom; no doctor, just old grandma and the kitchen table would have to do. With no work available, the entire family moved to Marshall Michigan, where they farmed as sharecroppers. When WW2 started, John got a job welding in a war plant making tanks. By this time, Blanche had a sister named Norma, and the family moved into town since the farm house burned down. As they grew, Norma had a beautiful voice and sang in a girl’s trio. Blanche designed and sewed all her own clothes.
After high school, Blanche married Kenneth Wells, a chiropractor and WW2 Purple Heart recipient. In the late 50’s they bought a farm house in Battle Creek, Michigan for $2000. Blanche furnished the house with items from local auctions and Kenneth built on an office, and renovated the interior by himself. Auction-going became a tradition until Ken brought home a free truckload of live chickens and ducks to be slaughtered and processed. Still, she would not let them go to waste, and so an assembly line was formed. Grandma, Sister Norma, and Blanche plucked and processed with Kenneth chopping heads out back.
She was determined to teach herself gourmet cooking, so she watched Julia Child and cooked all her recipes on the show. Some of her favorite recipes were Noodles Romanov, chocolate cake filled with whipped cream, crown rib roast with kumquats, beef burgundy, lamb shank in wine sauce, and lobster newburg. Blanche loved to host dinner parties. She gave away literally tons of food to church functions, neighbors, family and friends. What she couldn’t raise in her garden, she dragged the kids along to find fresh produce, blueberries, blackberries, apples, cherries, peaches, usually the “u pick” variety!
Blanche and Kenneth had three children: Lisa, Greg, and Aimee. Lisa became a microbiologist, Aimee a business woman, Greg a renovation expert. Blanche leaves behind 8 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
In the 60’s, Blanche and Norma were Beauty Consultants for Vivian Woodard Cosmetics. They were very successful and built a huge business in Battle Creek, Michigan. They even did all the makeup for the local beauty pageant. But Blanche was most proud of hosting a Bible study at the office. 50 new couples came into the church at that time due to the Bible study.
In the late 70’s, both Norma and Blanche were divorced and moved to a new house near Kalamazoo, Mi. They started another business called Aloe Beauty Care. Blanche was a committed Christian throughout her life, attended the local Assembly of God, and always tried to keep her children in church. She was a life-long Republican and followed the news continually. She became the caretaker of her mother Margaret, until she passed away. Blanche also became a realtor and helped many people find a good house through her honesty and hard work.
She lived with her daughter Aimee for a year before moving to Colorado 16 years ago to live with her oldest daughter Lisa, her son-in-law Neil, grandson Aaron, and of course Max the dog! She lived at the Rowland House since 2023.
