Our farm is located on historic Stafford Street in Stafford Springs, CT. In 2016 we opened our garden shop, offering annuals, herbs, perennials, native plants and vegetable plants on a seasonal basis. In the spring we grow 200 varieties of heirloom and specialty tomato and pepper plants. We also offer a large selection of herbs including many that are hard to find. The farm is open in May every da

y from 9 to 5 for the Spring season. Our floral design business is also based at our farm. We provide custom floral design for weddings and events. Projects range from traditional flowers to the unique and natural look of hand-tied, stylized free-form bouquets and elements. We do not host weddings at our farm at this time. We also maintain a herd of precious Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys. Our breeding stock has been carefully selected from bloodlines throughout the US to produce healthy, beautiful foals. They make terrific pets and companion animals. Our donkeys have open access to their stalls and pastures all day long and receive regular worming, hoof care and vaccinations. Foals are occasionally offered for sale.

Meet The FHF Team! If you’ve ever spent time with the FHF donkeys, you already know one thing: Linda is a celebrity in their world. She’s been part of the gang since 2017, and they adore her just as much as we do. Linda is the ultimate volunteer — patient, gentle, and completely devoted to caring for every animal, not just our miniature donkeys on the farm. She brings a calm, joyful energy that the whole herd responds to. When she’s not giving out donkey snuggles, you’ll find her chatting with visitors and sharing the stories, quirks, and big personalities of each member of the herd. And yes… she’ll be the first to admit that one of her favorite parts of being here (besides Amy’s famous drinks) is connecting with the people who come to experience the magic of the farm. Her tip for first time visitors is simple and perfectly Linda: “Relax, enjoy, and have fun while you’re here.”

Meet The FHF Team! Troy has been with the FHF team since 2023 – just before heading off to college studying botany! Troy’s role highlights: Greenhouse specialist; perennial garden care; Foster Hill Floral’s wedding florals. In true New England fashion, the best way to describe him is simple: Troy is ‘Wicked Smaht” and that’s why we love having him here with us! If you want plant advice from someone who knows both the science and the soil, Troy’s your person. His favorite thing about FHF is the wide variety of tomato and pepper plants. “Having so many options is just amazing. Nowhere else will you find a garden shop with over 150 tomato plant varieties.” For first time visitors – his helpful hint is to talk with the team! “Everyone here are very knowledgeable, along with being super helpful to our customers.”

✨International Year of the Woman Farmer Spotlight✨
Kim Milikowski, Foster Hill Farm in Stafford Springs, CT

Kim traded in her scarves and business suits for Carhartt's and bandanas, and has been farming for 18 years on 120 acres operating a seasonal garden shop with 200 varieties of specialty and heirloom tomato and pepper plants along with hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, and other vegetable plants. Foster Hill Farm is also the largest breeder of registered Mediterranean Miniature donkeys in the northeast.

🍅What inspired you to become a farmer?
As a young girl I would visit my great grandfather, Ben Specht, in Milton, PA, during the summer. He grew Burpee Big Boy and Henderson Winsall tomatoes along with Red Bliss potatoes and other vegetables. I remember seeing those giant tomatoes and watching as he pushed a pitchfork into the ground to overturn a clump of potatoes. We were both so excited to see what was under the earth and all of the little potatoes. We grow Burpee Big Boy and Henderson Winsall plants every year and the porch swing that Ben and I sat in is the swing that is on our porch at the farm. There is a lot of good energy in that swing and I love to sit on it at the end of the day and feel it.

🍅What advice would you give to other women?
Farming and agriculture is a lifestyle combined with the responsibilities of self-employment if it is your own farm. The crops and animals come first. You may have employees but ultimately it is you who shoulders all of the responsibility.

🍅Describe a challenge you face as a woman farmer:
The most devastating challenge by far for me was the loss of my husband, Karl. We ran the farm together for many years and he died suddenly of a heart attack. Losing him was like losing half of myself from a work standpoint and spiritually as well. There were many times that I thought it was going to be too much for me to handle on my own but task by task we have figured things out with the help of my adopted farm family. Hard as it is I love the lifestyle, love the land, the joy this brings to others.

Meet The FHF Team! Bill – aka “Retail Bill” - also aka “Flexi-Bill” - and also aka “Grady’s Dad” - has been kicking around the farm for a couple years now. We love how versatile he is in any position – if it needs doing, he gets it done! Typically – you’ll find him up front in or near the garden shop. He adores all our customers – claims they are all celebrities. “Our customers are the BEST!! Their loyalty and dedication, their enthusiasm for our heirloom and specialty tomato and pepper plants is so fabulous!” His favorite thing about the farm? His answer: “I love being a part of this, and Kim is amazing!” His helpful tip for visitors is to just ask – we’re all happy to help!

Say hello to Amy, who joined the farm in 2021 and has been wearing many hats ever since — both figuratively and literally. Her specialty is greeting customers with her sparkling smile, but she’ll admit she’s easily distracted by the irresistible urge to photograph… well, everything! Gorgeous plants and flowers, the donkeys, the shifting light across the landscape — if it catches her photographic eye, she’s pointing her camera at it. This year, Amy brought something extra special to the farm: her hand painted garden signs, each one crafted with the same joy and positivity she pours into her work here. One of her favorite moments on the farm happens in early spring, inside the greenhouses while it’s still winter outside. “I feel like the baby plants and the warmth are soaking into me. The smell of the soil, the sunshine. Best place to breathe.” It’s her reset button — and one of the reasons she loves this place so deeply. Her tip for first time visitors: Plan to stay longer than you think. "This farm is not a big box supply store. Everything grown here is special to all of us, grown with love — and the whole place is meant to be experienced, not rushed."
