Tip of the Week:
Man-made Materials in furniture-Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). This material is not to be confused with particle board or hardboard. Particle board is made from saw dust and small chips bound in a resin. Hardboard (example: Masonite) is made from wood pulp, sometimes tempered with linseed oil. MDF is made from wood fibers that have been steamed, then bound into a sheet with resin. The surface is very hard and smooth, and the material has approximately the same density all the way through, so the edge can be milled if desired. MDF takes paint on its surface very well, or can be veneered. As a substrate for veneer it is very hard and smooth, so veneers can be thin without allowing problems from the substrate to “telegraph” through. MDF is very heavy, and somewhat weak structurally (shelves will bend under load, and take on a permanent curve unless reinforced). It will swell from moisture. It is inexpensive but more costly than particle board, since it is denser, stronger and more difficult to manufacture. MDF has been in use since the 1980’s. Unlike particle board, it does have uses in custom cabinetry. I sometimes use it in painted furniture or cabinetry as raised panels, cabinet backs and in some millwork applications. As a stable, smooth surface that can take a milled edge, it can serve well in the right circumstances. I
