HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR HOME'S WOOD SIDING
Protect your wood siding from moisture by covering it. Wood contracts and expands with changing temperatures and humidity levels, so it's important to shield it. There are different ways to do this.
Paint covers the surface, while stain penetrates for better moisture protection. Keep in mind that changing the color of stained siding is tough. If you may want a different color in the future, paint might be a better choice.
For the natural wood color lovers, apply a clear sealer, but know that wood may still turn gray from sunlight exposure. Regardless of your choice, reapplication will be needed periodically, depending on weather and sunlight.
Avoid spraying water on your house when watering the lawn, and check sprinklers to prevent water reaching the siding. Trim trees and bushes to avoid moisture damage. Regularly clean the siding using soap and water or vinegar and water with a soft brush. Power washing is an option but use a low setting to prevent damage.
Inspect your wood siding yearly for cracks, gouges, damaged caulk, or missing sections. Catching problems early can allow for simple repairs, but if major sections need replacement, hire a contractor to avoid causing more damage.
