Collecting basil seeds 🌱

I was staying at my niece's place while she was out of town. Before leaving, she had planted some herbs, and most of them were doing great. This basil plant, however, looked a little stressed from the dry conditions. When basil experiences stress, it often starts to flower and produce seeds.

Just before I left, I noticed some of the seeds were ripe and ready to harvest. So I collected a few for myself and left plenty behind for her. 😊

Wild onion or garlic? πŸ§…πŸ§„

While taking my morning walk here in NC on a road I have walked dozens of times, I noticed something new on the side of the road.

I saw what looked like wild onions… or possibly wild garlic? As I looked closer, I noticed the flowers had a purple hue. Then I picked one of the flat leaves and caught the distinct onion smell.

So, what do you think, wild onion or garlic? I think I’ll be watching for seeds. 😊

Let me know what you think it is! πŸŒΏπŸ‘‡

🌿 Garden update 🌿

I’m so happy to see that my plants did so well through the winter here in North Carolina! It’s finally time to get back out there, thinning, cleaning up, and doing some harvesting. 🌱

The oregano, sage, parsley, and echinacea are all ready for some attention, and I’m excited to start using what the garden has given me. ✨

There’s something so rewarding about seeing plants come back season after season.

What are you harvesting from your garden right now? 🌿

After finally getting back to Murphy for the summer, I was nervous to see what my garden looked like after being away since last September. 🌿

My neighbors warned me it had been an unusually cold and dry winter, and unfortunately some of my favorite plants, including my rosemary and lavender, didn’t make it through. πŸ’” The dry soil was a strong reminder of how important moisture is before freezing weather arrives.

Thankfully, not everything was lost. My comfrey is thriving, the porch herbs are happy, and my parsley is getting ready to bloom beautifully. 🌱

In this week’s Herb Talk, I’m sharing what I found when I returned to Murphy, what survived the winter, and a few lessons on protecting your plants during cold weather.

Deflowering tomatoes πŸ…

These tomato transplants were made from suckers removed while pruning the mother plant. I remove the early flowers so the plant can focus its energy on building strong roots, stems, and branching before setting fruit.
