Hoya SS 20-01. Unnamed, unbothered, blooming. 🌸

This one is a hybrid between Hoya desvouxensis and Hoya crassipetiolata — if you know crassipetiolata, you already have a sense of what this plant is capable of. The cross has produced a strong, fast grower for us. One of those plants that rewards you for paying attention.

Hoya names aren’t random — they’re a system. Once you learn to read them, every name tells you something about what you’re growing.

The species epithet often references where a plant was originally collected — a region, a country, even a specific location. Hoya sp. Ambon tells you something. Hoya mindorensis tells you something. The name is context.

This carousel breaks down the nomenclature you’ll actually encounter as a collector: binomial names, sp. and sp. aff. designations, cultivar notation, and hybrids. It’s worth understanding before you add to your collection.

We’ve been waiting for this. Both forms of Hoya thomsonii, blooming at the same time. 🌸

The pink form lives up to its name — deeply saturated, unmistakable. The “white” form is reading pale pink rather than true white, which we think may be a light effect on the flower pigmentation rather than its baseline color.

Both are growing under the same conditions, so the difference in saturation between the two forms is genuine.

The pink form is also the faster grower of the two, which tracks with what others have observed.
