Have you been thinking of joining the Strafford Garden Club? If so, come and join us at our first gathering of the gardening season, our Potluck lunch, Monday, April 7th, noon at 1082 Province Road. Everyone brings some food to share, their $10 annual dues, and any updates to their contact information for the handbook. Though regular meetings are usually at the Grange Hall on the first Monday, it's nice to gather at a home when we first get together in the spring. Chris Brown and Lou Gagnon are our hosts this year. After the lunch there'll be some business to take care of as we begin the preparations for our Plant Sale in May. There is work to be done and we will welcome new helpers and new friends!

For assistance against fungal problems such as Powdery Mildew and Early or Late Blight in tomatoes, consider a baking soda spray as opposed to conventional fungicides. Dissolve one teaspoon of baking soda into one quart of water. A few drops of insecticidal soap or liquid soap can be added to help the solution spread and stick to the leaves. (There are commercial products that use baking soda as well, in a more concentrated, refined version)
Stir up your mixture and pour into a clean, empty spray bottle. Spray the plant completely, reaching both the upper and lower leaves, and let the plant dry.
Occasionally it has been a race to get in a tomato crop before blight destroys the plant, but baking soda can give you a boost to bring in the crop.
Mulching the soil underneath the plants helps to prevent soil splashing up on the leaves, as the soil can contain fungal spores.
Allowing for good air circulation and spacing between plants also helps the spread of fungal diseases.
