🍅 🌱 Did you know that we create raised beds? There are many reasons to have a raised garden bed instead of planting directly into existing soil. In this example, space was limited, the soil was very wet and rocky and it made sense to raise it up for success. Here we created a keyhole style raised garden bed rich with a mix of Vermont local organic compost/soil mix. We also added fencing to help keep the critters from nibbling your food. The result is a thriving and rewarding garden. Just look at those tomatoes 🍅

Why are my spring bulbs coming up early and will the return of cold weather harm them?

The answer is most likely no. Spring bulbs begin to emerge when the temps are above 40 degrees. Early bulb growth is usually little cause for concern. Foliage that comes up early may be damaged by freezing temperatures, but as long as the flower buds are still beneath the soil, the bulb is still likely to bloom in the spring. The leaves may look a bit tattered in the spring, but the flowers will distract from them. The usual suspects are daffodils, hyacinths, some early blooming tulip varieties, snowdrops and crocuses. This can also happen when bulbs are planted close to your house, creating a microclimate from house warmth and reflecting sun.

Unfortunately, if flower buds emerge in the winter and normal cold temperatures return, the buds might freeze and fail to bloom. This is unlikely and even if a bulb fails to flower in one season, there is a good chance that it will the following.

Just because bulbs start to grow in the winter does not mean that they will bloom early. The return of cold weather can delay further growth and keep bulbs from flowering until a more appropriate time. A blanket of snow on the ground can halt the growth process as well as protect the emerging foliage from extreme temperatures.

There’s no need to wait until spring when you can have plentiful blooms inside. Today I brought the first round of Hippeastrum bulbs out of dormancy for winter blooms. 8 weeks in the cool, dark cellar is enough to trigger the blooms and one month out of dormancy to bloom time. Come spring, I’ll toss them outside and forget about them and bring them back in when it gets cool again. You might know these as Amaryllis, but they are actually Hippeastrum. To put it simply, Amaryllis is a bulb from South Africa with only one species (Amaryllis belladonna). Hippeastrums are from Central and South America with 90 species and well over 600 cultivars. The name Hippeastrum was coined by English botanist Reverend William Herbert noting that the flowers resemble the Knight’s Star, a medieval weapon. Greek ‘hippeus’ meaning (knight) and ‘astron’ meaning (star). It wasn’t until the mid-eighties that botanists decided these are Hippeastrum and yet they are still named Amaryllis in the trade. Whatever you call them, they bring joy during the home on those cold winter days.

Our client wanted a garden here and was unable to work on such a steep slope. We came up with a solution working with the existing retaining wall and added two garden bed tiers. We also built steps up the slope for easy access. We planted spring blooming bulbs today and will come back in spring to plant Vermont Native and Vermont friendly blooming perennials.

Here’s a small installation I did to beautify and add charm to this white fence. I chose white planter boxes so they disappear and not take away from the fence or the flowers that seem to be floating. The annuals used are Calibrachoa ‘Cabrio Yellow’ and Calibrachoa ‘Pomegranate Punch’ and they will last all season long.

Summer is underway and the weather has been amazing here in Sudbury, Vermont. To give you a scope of our work, pictured below is one of the beautiful properties that we maintain next to the historic Sudbury Townhall. We keep the greens mowed and weeds away from the main house, all the barns and the fence line along the cow pasture, paying great attention to detail. We work hard and love what we do working in the great outdoors of Vermont.

We are now accepting new clients. Please contact Brent Greeno 802-771-4249 or Ryan Inskeep 802-771-4938.

We recently resurrected this artesian spring where the rocks had sunk in over the years and painstakingly weeded out the New England invasive Tussilago farfara (Coltsfoot). We then added Vermont native Caltha palustris (Marsh Marigold) to awaken the spring with its bright yellow blossoms that attract many pollinators.
