I haven't been posting my harvests much this year, but the weather is slightly changing and the peppers, eggplants and okra are finally taking off!
The ghost peppers are starting to produce (not harvested yet), still waiting on the trinidad scorpions to come alive.

Unfortunately, my pumpkins, OG cucumbers, squash and cantaloupes have all been demolished by squash bugs. I fought a good fight this year and kept them at bay much longer into the season than last, but I was still defeated. I did get a few cute little sugar pumpkins, plenty of cucumbers to make pickles, a good amount of squash but not as much as last year and each cantaloupe got destroyed by a mystery bird/animal. This was my first year having vine borers also.

The cucumbers shown are from my second batch planted on the other side in late June(?). There are new ones growing in another bed, so we'll see! Pic of the giant eggplant, but unfortunately the bugs got to it first and it went to the chickens.

First time harvesting dill seeds. ☺️
Dill has been very useful, both for dill pickling and feeding the Black Swallowtail caterpillars πŸ›...that turn into the BEST (and most beautiful) pollinating butterflies. πŸ¦‹

Yesterday we were able to get the corn and green beans bagged up for the freezer. Hours were spent blanching before getting them into the bags to be vacuumed sealed. We also made our first batch of pickles the other day, more to come! The cucumbers are starting to take off quickly. πŸ₯’

This was my first year growing sweet corn. I planted 5 rows of 10, 50 corn stalks. The corn grew, but unfortunately they were small at maturity. Enough was harvested to provide us with about 4-5 dinners (we already cooked some also). The smaller ears had to be fed to the chickens. The corn was planted with cow manure (Black Kow) but we'll have to figure out how to adjust the soil better next year! 🌽

We should have a surplus of zucchini, squash, green beans, cucumbers, (possibly) pickles, okra, peppers and tomatoes soon.

There is also cantaloupe, pumpkins, watermelon, eggplant and spaghetti squash planted that is TBD on harvest.

Having a garden makes you "become one" with nature - this includes finding the beauty in bugs and insects.
Some are there to help you, some are there to destroy your garden. It's a yearly battle that nobody is ever fully prepared for. The good guys stay, the bad guys turn into chicken food.
Snake included for extra spice. 🐍

Did you know marigolds are GREAT pollinators? 🏡️

These (presumed male) common Eastern bumble bees will hang out until the first frost before going into hibernation. 🐝 There was also a single scoliid wasp hanging around. These are beneficial wasps that prey on beetles and grubs.

We will be keeping some of the active marigolds in the garden for them until they go away for the winter.
