Folks we are seeing posts on how people are going to use back up heat sources in the event they loose power during the storm. Please use caution! Gas grills and outdoor cooking devices can be very dangerous to heat with in a closed area. Blast heaters using kerosene or diesel are ok in a shop area or open space but not in a home. Temperatures will fall to very dangerous lows over the weekend. Be aware your central unit will run a lot and if it is, it’s ok, it’s just doing that to keep up. Homes will 90% gas furnaces, make sure your furnace drain is clean and if it is draining outside make sure termination is insulated and covered to keep drain from freezing. Leave your thermostat set a a lower but comfortable setting. If your thermostat is on a schedule, take it off the schedule and leave heat running. Folks with wood floor, crawl space homes, make sure your foundation vents are closed and leave your facets dripping. Emergency heat settings should be used starting this afternoon and left on that setting until we get above freezing and only after you inspect your outdoor unit to make sure ice is melted on the fan blade. If your outdoor unit is making an unusual noise, turn it back to em heat. Stay safe friends!

With the incoming weather event, we encourage our customers to switch your heat pump to EM heaters if you have this feature. With the possibility of ice accumulation on surfaces, this can also accumulate on your outdoor unit causing your fan motor to become unbalanced. This could cause severe damage to your unit. If you don’t have the EM feature, keep an eye on the outdoor fan blade and keep it clear if ice as much as possible. Also, close your shades and blinds to keep as much heat in as possible. This is a serious cold temperature situation that can cause damage. Double check that your hoses are disconnected from faucets and dripping your faucets would be a good idea. Stay warm friends!

Well it’s that time of year! Old man Winter is showing his face! If you have a heat pump, you could be experiencing some long run time to keep your house comfortable. My suggestion would be to switch to emergency heat if you have the option for the next few days. Highs near freezing and snow are forecasted until Saturday and that’s when I would switch back to regular heat. Also if you use gas logs in your fireplace, be sure they are clean and logs are installed correctly. Folks with mini split heat pumps will continue to have heat but make sure you keep the snow cleared from around the outdoor unit. If you do use your heat pump system, you may notice water(ice) around the outdoor unit. This is normal! This is a defrost cycle which makes water but during this weather the defrost isn’t as effective and you may notice ice accumulating on your outdoor unit. This is normal but with these temps, it may build up causing an issue with the outdoor fan. Just another reason to use emergency heat. Stay warm friends! Check on your neighbors, they may have extra milk and bread! 😜

PSA>.. The heating and air conditioning business is getting ready to go through a big change starting in January. The new standards for freon will be changing. R410A is what most units less than 10 years old are using and the new equipment will be phasing it out to a new, refrigerant that will be more flammable and the price of a new system will increase between 13% to 25% depending on brand. R410 systems will no longer be built after January 1st. This is a little unsettling in the fact of the unknown. We are suggesting that if you are in the market for a new HVAC system anytime soon, start getting serious because of the changes. Call us for more information or look online at the new mandates.
