"The first thing one notices when climbing the stairs to the second floor of the Discovery Center at Tuscawilla Park is the wooden floor: sparkling, polished and gleaming.

"It was just like the string of pearls on the dress. It just made everything shine," Suzanne Shuffitt, the city of Ocala's Discovery Center supervisor, said about the reconditioning done by Matt Marwick.

That floor, which is central to the center's upstairs renovation, has history.

"People come in and say, 'I used to play basketball up here. We had a dance up here when I was in high school,' " Shuffitt said. "It's kind of fun."

What one does not notice about the center's upstairs renovation, but certainly would if it were missing today, is the new air conditioning system. But the fresh paint and newly tinted windows certainly breathe new life into the space.

"It was kind of an ugly basketball gym. Now it's pretty amazing," said Tim Dean, chairman of the Discovery Science and Outdoor Center Foundation. Dean also is a member of the Ocala Rotary.

"It's just beautiful. I think it's one of the nicer places in town now," he said.

Ocala's six Rotary clubs, along with the foundation, became partners with the city in the enhancement project.

Rotary and the foundation provided $24,000 toward the upstairs facelift and another roughly $15,000 to support the exhibit and for furniture, according to Kathy Crile, the city's recreation and parks director. The city spent $86,000 on the second-floor refurbishment."
