Over time a chimney without a safety cap will start to have a lot of detiriation problems in the flue system, the smoke chamber and fire box. As shown in the pictures below the left side is a chimney that has been damaged by water getting into the flue system due to not have a safety cap at termination. A chimney cap keeps the rain out. If this was the only reason to install a chimney cap it would be enough. Go over to your fireplace right now and look at the back firewall near the base. Take a screwdriver or coin and run it across the mortar between the bricks. Seem a little crumbly? Or maybe its obvious just looking at it. Rain puddles up on the smoke shelf, mixes with creosote in the chimney and turns it into a highly corrosive acid which seeps down and attacks the mortar joints on the back of the fireplace. The mortar becomes weak and presto, the bricks on the wall become lose. You can avoid this by calling today and scheduling an appointment to get a chimney cap!!!
