How to prep for your garden in the spring.

Gardeners all across the Midwest are becoming eager to start prepping their gardens for this year’s growing season. What are some practical ways you can get your garden ready? Here’s what we do in the spring to ensure an abundant produce:

1.) Get a plan. Think of ways to optimize the space in your garden this year. What will you plant? When will you plant? How will you arrange your produce? If you’re growing from seeds, make sure to order them and have them started early.

2.) Organize your shed, greenhouse or garage. Having a neat space to store your equipment is a fundamental advantage to a successful growing season.

3.) Prepare your tools. Clean off all debris and dirt from your gardening tools to ensure that they’re sterilized of any rust, w**d killers or harmful bacteria leftover from last year. See what tools you may need to sharpen, repair or replace.

4.) Clean up your garden. Get rid of leaves, w**ds and annual plants that are left over from last year. If you planted cover crops, work them into the soil so that they begin to decompose before you plant. Once you’re done with this step, you should be down to bare soil. If your soil is compacted, be sure to loosen it by using a rototiller and/or applying organic matter to aid with airflow.

5.) Finally, apply your favorite HyR BRIX® Fertilizer. Mixing this fertilizer into the soil before planting will allow it to begin its’ breakdown process and start releasing nutrients, creating a healthier soil for your produce.
