Unless you are under a rock in Buncombe county you probably know that we are in for some snow this weekend and some cold temps. Snow is actually a good thing when the temps go into the teens. It acts as a insulator to keep foliage covered so the wind does not take the moisture out of them on evergreens and the roots at a constant temp. Covering the plants with frost cloth can do more damage than good due to excessive weight on the branches. There are some great plants for winter color that look particulary impressive in the snow. Those are the plants that I am going to focus on in the coming week. More to come!

Once again I have gotten slammed on facebook. According to this couple I have just started screaming in a rage for no apparent reason scaring children and making a spectical at the farmers market. So let me tell what happened.... There is an elderly lady that lives across the street from the market and she gets upset when people turn around in her drive and also when they pull there cars on her grass. She has even called the police to complain. I've met her and I told her that I would watch and make sure nobody messes up her yard. Saturday I look up and there is a SUV pulled off the road all 4 wheels in her grass straddling her sidewalk I yelled over and said that is someones yard you can't park there. Kevin Murphy loked over and said " Why you just chill out and sell your flowers". Robin that helps run the market told him also not to be in her yard. His response was "how may people are going to yell at me for being in this spot". During this time their brood piled out of the car ( 15 ft from her front porch ) and his wife Kellin Watson started yelling at me " Stop screaming at us" over and over at me as she dragged her kids in front of me. Kevin then looked at me and said "No harm done" and pulled over and parked. Both of them have been at the market before and there is a spot at the entrance that they could have dropped her mom off with less walking. She was sooo frail that she walked back across the street and picked up some money that she dropped in the ladys yard. That is what happened.Kevin and Kellin are both a holes and their opinion is about as good as their respect for other peoples property WORTHLESS What is wrong with people did respect go out the window? Why would you slam someones business that they have worked hard to establish when it was you that was in the wrong. If you are going to tell a story tell the whole story not just your deranged side of it.

Summer Spotlight: Ninebark
Botanical Name: Physocarpus Opulifolius

Did you know that most varieties of ninebark reach their mature height and width in the first year of planting? That. Is. Fast. How satisfying is that? Although growing that quickly may seem daunting, making sure you give the plant space to reach its full size and some light pruning are all this shrub needs. Ninebark is best pruned after it blooms, although you can prune in late winter before new growth starts if you don’t mind sacrificing a few blooms. Pruning and thinning out the older stems can completely prevent powdery mildew (which is the only real concern for ninebark) by improving aeration.

Ninebark is deer resistant and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

‘Diabolo’ variety grows to 10’ H & W and has burgundy purple foliage and white flowers. Full sun.

‘Panther’ variety grows to 5’ H & 3’ W and has pink blooms in spring and purple leaves throughout the summer taking on reddish hues in the fall. Full sun.

‘Monlo’ Diabolo Treeform grows to 6’-8’ H & W. Full sun is optimal for the deepest coppery leaf tones and best blooms although it will thrive in partial shade if needed. In fall this treeform variety will transform into a fiery red that is reminiscent of burning bush. Blooms in summer with rounded and showy clusters of white flowers that start off as pink.

Stop by the Garden Center to see our selection of ninebark shrubs and tree forms or see us Friday 3-7pm and on Saturday, 9am-4pm at the Monte Vista Hoteland support the Black Mountain Fall Garden Sale.

Why should asters replace mums for fall?

Almost everyone loves to adorn front porches, entryways and outdoor spaces with potted mums in varying shades of reds, oranges and yellows. Whether you leave the mums in pots or plant in your perennial garden, they have the tendency to feel a little to traditional, no pizazz if you will.

As you can see [pictured] Basil, the shop cat, implores our customers to try asters as a fresh and different alternative to mums.

Asters come in a wide variety of colors, from shades of blue, pink, red, lavender, purple or white and bloom from late summer to early fall.

When planting asters, place them in a full sun location (at least six hours) and they need regular to moderate water*. Whether you decide to leave them in pots and overwinter them i side or to plant in your perennial garden, you’ll still look forward to pop of fresh color asters provide.

For planting ideas, check out The New Southern Living Garden Book, which states, “taller asters are invaluable for abundant color in large borders or among shrubs. Large sprays are effective in arrangements. Compact dwarf or cushion types make tidy edgings, mounds of color in rock gardens, and good container plants.

*We recommend planting everything with Biotone Starter Plus, which is organic, and strengthens the root structure from the first day planted and changes the plant on a cellular level to uptake more water; and soil moist crystals. Just a pinch will reduce watering by 50% for 3-5 years.

Summer Spotlight: Garden Mums (Chrysanthemum spp.)

Garden mums are herbaceous perennials in the daisy family. Chrysanthemums are the loyal, hardworking perennial in an autumn garden.

Most mums are of the annual kind that are sold blooming in pots. However there are varieties that are truly perennial in most climates when planted in early spring or in the fall (as long as it is planted several weeks before the first frost).

Mums prefer full sun, however can handle a little shade, and likes rich, well draining soil. Grows to 4”-36” tall 12”-36” wide.

You can plant mums now, or as soon as the soil warms in spring. Pinch back tips and flower buds in summer-this makes the plant bushier as well as prepares it for a dramatic fall show. Once the blooms are spent, cut the plant to 6” from the top of the ground and cover them with straw or another dry mulch to protect roots over the winter.

Garden mums are beautiful in mixed borders, especially when paired with other late-season bloomers like sedum, Russian sage, asters and gaillardia.

Mums do require a lot of watering, about an inch a week early on and then increase to double or triple the amount of water when flower buds begin to open.
