That standing dead tree isn't a hazard — it's a high-rise.
A single snag can house 40+ species over its lifetime.
Removing it doesn't create safety — it creates homelessness.
Current residents of your "dead" tree:
- Woodpeckers excavate new cavities each year
- Owls inherit abandoned woodpecker holes
- Flying squirrels nest in upper hollows
- Bats roost under loose bark strips
- Nuthatches cache seeds in bark crevices
- Beetle larvae feed dozens of bird species
When a cavity tree falls naturally, the cycle continues on the ground.
When you cut it down, the cycle ends.
If it's not threatening your roof, leave it standing.

So grateful for this rain, even if it is making market a little soggy. I’m super impressed with how many people are out this morning, umbrellas in hand, loading up with locally grown, handmade goodness.

You can find me at the for the next couple of Saturdays. I always leave there with a cooler of goodies for the week and it makes meal planning so much fun, building around what’s in season. With over 50 vendors you can find about anything you could imagine. Last week’s haul: sourdough loaf, ramp goat cheese, romaine lettuce, beets, peas, the best chai latte, ground beef, and a tomato plant! Yes, I took home more plants. 😎🪴
