❄️ Swansea Power Outage: The "Don't Be a Statistic" Guide
If the grid’s gone dark and the South Coast wind is howling, here’s how to keep your pipes from bursting and your house from becoming an icebox.
🛠️ The "Must-Do" Checklist
• Clear the Vents: If you have a high-efficiency boiler or gas dryer (no chimney), clear the PVC pipes on the side of your house. Blocked vents = Carbon Monoxide or a dead furnace.
• Meter Check: Brush snow off your gas meter and electric main. Use a broom, not a shovel—don't pull a "local news headline" move.
• Save the Pipes: If indoor temps hit 40°F, shut off the main water valve. Open every faucet (top floor to basement) and flush the toilets to drain the lines.
• CO Safety: Check your battery-backed CO detectors. If you’re using a generator or fireplace, these are non-negotiable.
🌡️ Staying Warm (The "Micro-Climate")
• Pick a "Warm Room": Seal one room with towels under the doors.
• The Tent Trick: Set up a camping tent inside that room. Your body heat will keep the tent significantly warmer than the rest of the house.
• Blanket the Windows: Tape blankets directly to the glass. It’s ugly, but it works.
⚡ The "Just a Blip" Prep (Short Outages)
• Fridge is a Vault: Stop "peeking" at the milk. Every open door loses 10 minutes of cold.
• Unplug: Save your TV from the "Welcome Back" power surge; unplug electronics now.
• Charge Up: Get phones and power banks to 100% the second the wind starts picking up.
Being stuck inside with the kids during a storm is a lot like a clogged drain—lots of built-up pressure, a fair amount of screaming, and eventually, something is going to blow. Stay safe!
