Probably one of my TOP 10!
Can’t believe this plant is still at Sweet Fannie Maes!
Begonia maculata care requires balancing bright, indirect sunlight, consistent but cautious watering, and high humidity. Use a well-draining, airy potting soil, and feed monthly during the growing season to keep this striking polka-dot houseplant thriving.
* Optimal Light: Place your Begonia maculata in bright, indirect light, like near an east- or west-facing window. It needs plenty of light to encourage vibrant leaf color and blooms, but avoid harsh, direct sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
* Placement: Keep it in a draft-free location, as sudden temperature drops or drafts from heating vents can cause the delicate leaves to dry out and drop.
* Soil: Use a well-aerated, nutrient-rich soil. A mix of 5 parts high-quality indoor potting soil to 1 part perlite or orchid bark ensures proper drainage.
* Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry, allowing the excess to drain out the bottom. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. If you notice crispy, brown leaf tips, the plant may be getting underwatered or exposed to dry air.
* Avoiding Leaf Rot: Because the leaves are prone to powdery mildew, pour water directly onto the soil rather than splashing the foliage.
* Humidity: They prefer moderate to high humidity. Place a humidifier nearby or group the plant with other houseplants. Daily misting can mimic morning dew and help keep leaves lush, but avoid keeping the foliage constantly wet.
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer to promote healthy growth and flowers, scaling back to once a month in fall and winter.
* Pruning: Prune away dead or yellowing leaves using clean scissors to direct energy toward new growth.
* Staking: As the cane stems grow heavy with thick leaves and flowers, they may require staking with a small bamboo pole and soft plant ties to keep them upright and prevent snapping.
