What part of a roof composition shingle does the algae eat?
That is a great question. Most people think the black streaks on a roof are just dirt or soot, but it’s actually a living algae called Gloeocapsa magma.
To answer your question directly: the algae eats the limestone filler inside the shingles.
Modern composition shingles use crushed limestone to add weight and durability. Because limestone is calcium-based, it serves as a perfect food source for the algae. As it eats through that filler, it loosens the protective granules on top. This is why you’ll often see those colored granules collecting in the gutters—the algae is essentially 'unbonding' the protective layer of your roof.
