Hunt Middle School Dome Modernization
The Dome (lovingly nicknamed the “Mothership”), was originally a cafetorium built in 1956, and was in need of renovation after choir and band relocated to the main building.
Tacoma Public Schools desired to shift the programs towards a community-based mindset. The Weddermann team eventually touched every aspect of the project, guiding TPS through the process of remodeling
the existing building shell, adding accessibility, and making the building more flexible for multiple school and neighborhood uses. The historic dome now supports mixed-use, community-oriented programs.
On the interior, the commercial kitchen was converted into a concessions prep area, the stage was refinished, and the 20 year old curtains were replaced.
All classrooms received new flooring, risers were removed, the HVAC system was upgraded, a wheelchair lift was installed to provide access to the stage, and there’s new lighting throughout.
On the exterior, the dome-shaped roof was repaired, the building received a new paint job, and the grounds were refreshed.
