A-Frame Rising

A-Frame Rising Luxury A-Frame House Plans
Not your grandmother's A-frame. He accepted the challenge, but on the condition that it be designed on his own terms.

Todd Mather, AIA, our architect and co-founder, has been working closely with clients since 1994 from his native Park City, Utah, to his current Lake Tahoe, California. He’s received numerous awards for his intuitive solutions to both classic architectural obstacles and more unusual client needs. His architecture firm, Todd Gordon Mather Architect, has been busy serving residential & commercial cl

ients in California, Nevada, Colorado, & Utah since its founding in 2015. In 2016, Todd was approached to construct an A-frame in place of the client’s beloved Tahoe Basin cottage which had recently burnt to ash. Todd was not a fan of A-frames; they’re traditionally clunky, cramped, dark, and impractical. Todd’s formidable task was to design an A-frame that was livable, beautiful, and truly enjoyable, and what arose out of that commission was the Phoenix Rising A-frame. Contemporary and functional, it was unlike any A-frame we’d ever seen. Phoenix Rising earned Todd a 2019 CATT “Best New Residential Construction” award, multiple magazine features and other awards, and an abundance of new clients wanting their own modern ‘A.’

So, here we are. Todd reworked his influential first A-frame while retaining the core of what made it so special. He partnered with his daughter, Daly, who has been working with him at TGMA since 2018, to found A-Frame Rising with the intent of bringing these gorgeous designs to you. They’re both delighted as artists at the opportunity to collaborate creatively, and they look forward to working with you closely on your classic heirloom home.

One of the first criteria we set when we sat down to design our A-frames was that they must have uninterrupted views through the building--we wanted you to be able to stand at the front French doors and see the bright blue sky through the loft windows on the other side of the house. The petite size of our 01 A-frame showcases this idea perfectly--no matter where you are in the house, but especially when you're in the main living spaces, you're looking out artfully designed, oversized windows at the beauty beyond. Architecture should always be in harmony with its surroundings, and our A-frames are no exception.

The 01 A-frame is our smallest design, and yet with precisely placed dormers (some call them pop-outs), we've been able to create a home that feels open and spacious. This is especially evident in the kitchen, which sacrifices nothing in terms of functionality, navigability, and aesthetics. Our Utah clients chose to move their laundry machines into a dedicated room just behind the kitchen, which opened up another 36" or so of kitchen storage space.

What's the point of building your home on a lot with a million-dollar view if you don't take full advantage of it? The living room, kitchen, dining room and loft of this A-frame home in Tollgate Canyon, UT, all look out over the expansive Uinta Mountains and a vast blue sky. Our minimalist architecture maximizes the home's connection to the outdoors, allowing nature to become a twenty-three-foot mural. It simply doesn't get better than this.

From Tahoe’s last major blizzard many months ago. Thirteen feet of snow in northern Tahoe over just a few days, and guess what? Our ‘Phoenix Rising’ A-frame was just fine. That’s what you get when your architect has spent thirty years designing homes in the heart of western snow country: every home designed to weather the most intense of storms.

We get emails all the time from folks wondering if our A-frames can survive *their* winters. Tahoe’s snow load is 226 pounds per square foot, which is by far one of the highest in the nation. Ultimately, it comes down to your engineer to structurally design the house such that it’ll meet or exceed your local snow load requirements, but you better believe we’ve got you covered with the architectural design.

Forged in fire? Nah. Our designs were forged in ice.

The Infinity Lodge is looking absolutely smashing with a fresh coat of snow, seemingly perched on top of the world . I don’t think we could’ve dreamed of a better view for our 01 A-frame than this. Facing east toward the sprawling Uintas Mountains and sitting at 8,000 feet, this home is deeply connected to its natural environment, and its abundance of windows honor that.

Soon the interiors will begin to take shape, and we’re so excited to see the materials our clients have chosen!

Another A-frame is on its way! We first started working with our BC clients over eighteen months ago, and together we designed a dramatic lakeside retreat, complete with a generous master suite, multiple expansive outdoor gathering areas, a stunning entryway that perfectly frames the lake upon approach, and a basement fit for shuffleboard championships and smores around the firepit.

Construction was planned for last summer, but a major wildfire devastated the lake and the whole area had to evacuate. Thankfully, our clients remained safe and are ready to give construction another shot this year.

Follow along as we share their progress, and watch a truly one-of-a-kind A-frame once again rise up from ashes.

Happy holidays from our Tahoe winter wonderland. We’re grateful for another year with all of you.

These were some quick concept renders we made for our NH clients who were curious about daylighting an underground basement. Since the lot is flat and we didn’t want to lift the whole house to create three above-ground stories, we knew that an underground basement was the way to go. We wanted to maintain daylight & outdoor access as much as possible, though, so we brainstormed this lovely little garden terrace. With no real size restrictions on the lot, we made it big and green and round to contrast the sharp modernity of the A-frame.

Our clients ultimately had a different vision, so we’re going in a new direction that works better for their lifestyle, but these images were too cute not to share.

Let us know if YOU would include a garden terrace like this in your A-frame design!

A couple weeks ago Daly visited Dave & Shanna McCann at their A-frame-in-progress in Colorado to finally meet face to face, chat with their contractor, and tour the house! Set against a truly breathtaking backdrop of mountains, pines, and the biggest blue sky you’ll ever see, this A-frame is shaping up to be just gorgeous. Dave & Shanna were our very first clients—they bought our 03 design just weeks after our site launched—and we worked with them over the next several months to turn it into the home they’ll spend the rest of their lives in. Between running their business full-time and raising three boys, we knew it was important that their design be cozy and low-maintenance, safe for rowdy little ones, and yet functional enough to host gatherings. The result is this three-story A-frame—with four bedrooms & four bathrooms—nestled into the mountainside. Just wait til it’s finished!
