What do arborists do on their day off? Look at more trees, of course. The Calaveras Big Trees State park is an amazing grove of giant sequoia and one of the northern most groves in their range. The forest has been well managed and conserved for about 150 years. There are so few of these ancient giants left we much preserve them all cost. They are incredible and majestic, pictures don’t do them justice. These trees in Calaveras Big Trees average 900-2000 years old, some are close to 20’ in diameter and 300’ tall. Giant sequoia are known to live up to 3500 years and can get much bigger than these.

There are a lot of dead fir trees lately on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore. Poor forest management, overcrowded stands, bark beetles and drought but the main driving issue is root fungus. There are a few different types but the drought really caused the fungus to take over. Note the red and dark stains. This trees was green a few weeks ago, not dead top to bottom. 🌳

A good explanation of the fir die off. This is a study of the northwest but same thing is happening here.

Oregon forests are hardest hit with dead firs on roughly 1.1 million acres. This year’s numbers are nearly double the acres recorded during previous die-offs in Oregon.
