What the crap is this?! No wonder people get discouraged after buying fruit trees online! These over-priced varieties came 2 months after I ordered, with dried out roots. They immediately went into the I.C.U. portion of the nursery!

If this has been your expensive experience, consider POTTED, well-rooted cultivars next time. They acclimate better to Florida conditions, and are comparatively priced!

Let's talk grafted citrus trees. All citrus trees are grafted. This means the tree you bought (Satsuma, Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, etc) was grafted onto a rootstock of a different species. Usually sour orange or bitter lemon. Grafting is done for several reasons, particularly Disease & Pest Resistance, Faster Fruit Production, Predictable Fruit Quality, Environmental Adaptation, and Size Control. However, the rootstock will many times try to sprout and grow too! So it's imperative to remove those root suckers so they don't compete with your desired tree. This Satsuma, pictured above, was planted a year ago! Note how the thorny rootstock shoots are almost larger than the real tree (with the pink tag). All these thorny shoots need to be removed to save the tree.

Most people plant fruit trees waaaaaaay too deep! The result is a slow-growing, stunted tree with wasted fruiting seasons. Plant trees so the soil in the pot is slightly HIGHER than the ground around it. Dig a wider hole vs. deeper. (You can always build a birm around the tree to hold irrigation water). And mulch well in this drought to conserve moisture and keep the new roots cool.
