What to plant in Tally: it's seeding time! Find some seeds and get them in the ground. Lots of places to find seeds around town or order them online. Be sure to use plant markers to help you keep track of what you've planted. Seeds do best in well-drained soil.

You can always find each month's planting guide on our website.

Learned something new today!
Swipe ⬅️ to maybe learn something new, too!

Been traveling a lot lately and have neglected our second garden. While taking a stroll this evening, I noticed the candy cane peppers were looking a little naked. Found the culprits - tomato hornworms - and can confirm sweet peppers and hot peppers (extra buena mulata seeding stuck in a pot and never harvested) alike, they are fans!

In my perpetual quest to be a good host for the environment, I knew they turned into moths if left alone but never took the time to research. Lo and behold, posted about hawk moths. Aaannnnnd….guess where they come from??👀

I’m going to let these friends continue their quest to be their fullest selves and maybe we can watch their transformation.

Get your beds prepped for the fall growing season. While your plants may still be producing, when they start to decline in the number of "fruits" or if the "fruits" are smaller now, it's time to wave goodbye.
We encourage cutting at the base of the plant instead of removing the roots because there is a whole ecosystem (including worm food!) underneath the soil you don't want to disturb.

We've started booking our seasonal changeovers so DM us if you want us to do the work while you sit back and reap the benefits.

What to plant now: August. It's a great month for sowing several varieties of seeds. If you plant zucchini seeds now, you can expect to harvest in October. BUT if you are already growing or just finished growing squash and encountered squash vine borers, you should skip planting until next year. Check the seed packets for details on planting and spacing.

Be sure to label your seeds and record the variety, planting date and expected harvest date to your garden journal.

We tried a patio eggplant variety from and these were really prolific and didn’t encounter *any* pest pressure. Good germination, too.
This latest harvest went into a batch of baba ganoush which is just as easy to make and as tasty as hummus. Check out recipe on Pinterest.

July: What to plant. Here's a rather short list of things to plant right now in Tallahassee.

Peas: Pick southern varieties like cowpeas, field peas, crowder and cream peas. Plant from seed (graphic is missing an asterisk).

Peppers: Both sweet/mild and hot varieties. The hotter the temps, the spicier those peppers will get.

Pumpkins: Try Big Max, Prizewinner, Seminole, Jack-be-little, Jack-o-lantern and Calabaza. Plant from seed in a place where you have a lot of space for the vines to trail.

Tomatillos: Green and purple varieties. Keep your eye on these as they start to fruit because stink bugs are also fans.

Never pass up an opportunity to try something new in your garden. Gardening is a constant science experiment. If at first you don’t succeed, figure out what variables you can change, make an adjustment and try again. Here’s a baby(!) Seminole pumpkin thanks to free seeds at the check out counter

June: What to Plant. It's hot and humid in Tallahassee but you know that already. New this month is a designation of *** for those plants who need some afternoon shade. Plus, tomatillos are on deck (transplants, not starting from seed). Try both purple and green varieties.

Also, water needs can vary, depending on where you live in the county. It's best to water in the mornings and at the base of plants deeply for at least 30 minutes at a time. It's better to water longer a few times each week versus every day for a few minutes.

All of these lists are on our website: www.TheSupperGarden.com/WhattoPlantNow
