I have three homes in construction right now that sit on a body of water. I have been thinking a lot lately about sightlines.

The view from the doorway matters. And so does everything else between that entry moment and the water line.

When designing homes on the water, this line is a key element we plan for early. Some solutions are architectural. Some are as subtle as the height of a chair back or where a lamp is placed on a console. All of them are important because together they quietly create an experience.

When sightlines are thoughtfully resolved, a home feels calm, intuitive, and connected to its surroundings before you can quite explain why.

One thing I think about constantly as a designer is how to make the process feel lighter for my clients. They enter the design process while balancing careers, meetings, family, travel, and a full life.

A lot of people walk into a showroom straight from a stressful phone call or a packed workday. It’s hard to instantly shift gears and make thoughtful decisions about your future home when your mind is still somewhere else.

In my role as guide, I like to anticipate needs before they’re spoken. Creating pauses. Building in breathing room. Helping clients transition so they can be present. Giving them what they need so they can experience the process, not just survive it.

That care matters even more when I’m working with clients creating a home together later in life. There’s history, routines, compromise, sentiment, grief sometimes, excitement too. A home at that stage is rarely just about aesthetics. It’s about building a space that supports the life they want moving forward together.

Good design is not only what you see in the finished photos. It’s also how someone felt while getting there.

Today is the last day of school in our house, which means summer has officially arrived.

My favorite part of this season includes a pinch of adventure, a little less structure, and a lot more play. I’ll be enjoying longer evenings surrounded by the people I love, and I hope the season ahead brings a little of that for you, too.

Yesterday I posted about client pain points. Today, I thought I would share actual quotes from a Discovery Call. This call is the entry point to any project, and it's when people first explain what isn't working for them in their home. Do any of these echo challenges you have with your home?

When a project starts, clients show up in discomfort. They come with challenges they can't resolve. Maybe they don't have the time, or energy, or expertise to work through what is wrong. Something is stuck, and they are feeling friction.

In this case, the clients had decision fatigue. They found it wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be to agree on choices for the home, which slowed down the process. They feared buyer’s remorse on larger ticket furnishings. What if they made it across the line on big decisions, and then didn't love what they chose. Their demanding careers and adorable small children left them little time to work through these hurdles.

There are usually a host of reasons my clients reach out. Some are universal, some are specific, but they're all very real. These reasons stand between what is most important to them - creating a sense of home. If you're there too, you aren't alone. What ends as beautiful starts with challenge. I understand this deeply, and I sympathize.

This is what luxury looks like in Naples. As part of a business offsite this month, I toured incredible real estate in some of the most expensive zip codes on the West Coast. We were in homes ranging from $8 to $84 million, and I’m still reflecting on the grandeur.

There was also a $20,000 refrigerator, a private chef that works with the cast of Yellowstone, luxury showrooms, and a private sunset cruise.
