Did I warn other shoppers about planting frost sensitive summer crops in March in Tehachapi? Yes. Did I also grab a couple for myself just in case?? Also yes! 🤣 plants that can survive spring frosts include: 🥬🥦🥕 kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, greens, often lettuce & peas. (Some actually might “bolt” or do poorly if it’s TOO hot!)
Crops that can die & should be covered or put in greenhouse if below-40 F temps are expected: tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, peppers, okra. 🍅🥒🌶️

Honestly one of the best chem-free ways to handle early spring weeds in Tehachapi, as long as you’re within the appropriate fire safe seasonal window and a nice low wind day.

Stop by to grab some plants and gather some knowledge before they close! 💕

Decided to try making beeswax candles for little gifts this year! I have some extras available for $8 if any locals are interested. They’re 3oz and I’m planning to make lavender ones also :) Real local beeswax is a bit pricy but it smells nice!! 🍯Beeswax candles are said to help clean the air as they release negative ions when burned. 🍊🪻

Happy first of March! Are you thinking about your garden yet? Drop a 🪴 if you’re hoping to grow your gardening skills and knowledge this year. Drop a 🌱 if you’re hoping to start your own seedlings indoors soon!
In the meantime, here are some garden tasks to consider adding to your list this month!
—think about your garden wishlist (what would you like to grow? Planning to buy any more seeds?)
—weed your garden (here in Tehachapi the weeds are already popping up and it’s a nice time to pull them while the ground is soft or cover them with plastic or cloth before they get too big)
—top off your soil with some good stuff (compost, dead leaves, aged manure)
—plan your seed starting setup and get started with some seeds (full seed starting guide at veryeasyveggies.com—don’t make all the rookie mistakes)
—plant out some cold-tolerant crops like lettuce, chard, carrots, kale, broccoli, cabbage, peas, or some herbs (yes, now! Most of those will totally tolerate a little snow with no problem at all!).

I’m so excited to get growing again, what about you? 😃

Some people ask for local soil recommendations, this is one I would suggest! I personally like to mix a few different types including bagged and include chicken manure, bagged steer manure, rotting fall leaves, if available!
In Tehachapi one of the big priorities is that your soil can hold moisture well and not dry out too fast, so keep that in mind.
And remember, the better your soil the better your harvest!

It’s that time again.

Organic Green Compost available at the farm!

Tractor loads $25 a load (covers 5x10 1 1/2 inches deep). 5 gallon bucket $3

We use this for our deep mulch beds,
raised herb boxes and planters. Great time to get your garden ready for spring planting.
