Best thing about spring break is having a helper to get into the groove with. Ripping down 480’ of base for a remodel project. Never mind the temporary out feed setup, temporary power solution or all the boxes. We’ll get it sorted after we get settled in.

This 1/2” thick metal plate became the meat in a 20’ beam sandwich. The span is about 18’. Matching the head height of the existing patio without a center post required engineering calculations and a lot of assembly and handling challenges. @ Phoenix, Arizona

Sometimes you have to work on Sunday to try and keep momentum on a project and meet a schedule. How do you handle and fabricate a 20’ piece of steel bar that weighs almost 400 pounds at home? With a forklift from your neighbor Jerry, and a borrowed mag drill of course!I’ll post more this week to show what becomes of this steel. @ Tempe, Arizona

Not a bad place to call home base for the next few weeks. Today is a little trim carpentry, plumbing, and more flooring demo. Couldn’t be a more perfect day for remodel in the desert!

Here are a couple more pictures of our most recent bathroom remodel. These customers were awesome to work with and wanted the works! One thing we did was to put a recirculation pump in with the new tankless water heater that learns the high demand times from the users over time and automatically recirculates hot water during those periods. That combination of components ‘behind the scenes’ with this automated touch screen control system from makes for an awesome user experience! The trim from isn’t too bad either😉 Great photos by . Thanks to Keith Allen with Hacienda Plumbing for the awesome plumbing work. @ Chandler, Arizona

The showpiece of this recent master remodel has to be the custom 8’ barn door by . Photos by . We decided to frame the wall such that the bump out and arch around the doorway would be removed in favor of a clean horizontal line. The re-framing also allowed us to hide an automated shower valve, more on that later. Swipe to see before. @ Chandler, Arizona

Rafter tie in place after jacking the ridge to relieve a little tension. Chord came out without any challenges. I checked dimensions from the opposing top plates to make sure it didn’t move before and after. @ Tempe, Arizona

I was able to save some of the baseboards that I removed prior to demo on this doorway and reuse some of them. One thing I like to do when capping a wall like this is to build an assembly of the trim using cyanoacrylate glue with an activator. It dries really quickly and strong. One benefit of doing this is that you get a perfectly aligned trim that runs around the corner without gaps. Another benefit is not having to nail into the small piece of trim and risk splitting it. I push the assembly into the inside corner on the long side and caulk any misalignment on an inside corner rather than on an outside corner. A little clean up and caulking the nail holes and these will look like new.
