I enjoy getting updates from customers like this. This swamp white oak was planted 18 months ago and is showing out with a few acorns this year. While the tree is still several years from being big enough to provide a meaningful volume of mast to the deer herd, it's still a lot of fun to see a tree start to produce. Swamp white oaks consistently produce at a young age and are on my short list of favorite native trees.

No doubt, chestnuts are getting their day in the sun as far as their value as a planting for whitetails. Much of the attention is warranted. But I caution against planting only chestnuts. Diversity is king, and if you plant a wide array of species then you will be more successful at attracting and holding deer in the long run.

Here are two Big House persimmons I set aside last year as they were too ugly to sell and I was saving them for myself. They are in their 3rd year and branches are sagging with fruit.

One advantage to grafted trees is that they will produce fruit at a much younger age than a fruit tree grown from seed.
