I love learning about the little critters I find in the garden. Here are a few from this week. Plus….5 kittens and broken irrigation lines.

If you’re like us, you may be chomping at the bit to get those veggie and flower starts planted outside, but it’s just not safe yet! In zone 6b, it’s important to wait until May when all danger of frost has passed before planting outside. Things like peppers and tomatoes can be planted early May but we wait until mid May to plant things like basil, which is not cold hardy at all. It is time, however to start thinking about hardening off those plant starts! If you click on the link below, Susan will explain her process of hardening off plants.

What interesting animals have you found in your garden?

Just after midnight, I heard a strange noise in the garden, one I’ve not heard before. I also heard a little ruckus from the chickens, so I got my dog and we ran out to see what was happening. An OPOSSUM was leaving the garden area and walking towards the house. I’ve trained the dog to protect the property so she didn’t hesitate. Once I realized what it was, I commanded her to drop it. It played dead and the dog left it alone. Apparently they release a smell that fools predators into thinking they’re actually dead - and it worked. I put the dog away and watched from my window to see what it would do (it was unharmed). It got up and hung out with the cats for a bit before disappearing into the arborvitae. It was so cool to see what it looked like up close. Here’s a link to learn a little more about opossums I found interesting.

I’d love to hear about your garden critters.

Here’s one of our new favorite recipes. Look at all the amazing things from the garden that you can add to a Mediterranean Orzo Pasta Salad. I rarely fallow the directions of a recipe, but this was the recipe (below) we started with before doing our own thing.

Spinach, cucumbers, sweet peppers, tomatoes, onion, shallots, legumes, herbs, or whatever you’d like to add.

Last year, our son, Beaudry and his wife Brooklynn got married in August in our yard. It was the most exciting event we’ve ever had at our home.

I want to share what some of the flowers, especially the wedding arch, looked like. It was absolutely beautiful. A woman by the name of Nora Chamberlain created the wedding arch. It was the most magnificent, whimsical masterpiece I’ve ever seen! To save money, we grew as many flowers as we possibly could. It was my first experience ever trying to grow flowers. Normally, we just grow things that are edible lol. If you look closely, you’ll see solidago golden rod (the happiest yellow ever), many varieties and colors of zinias, hydrangeas, Lisianthus, mint, and feverfew. I think there might be some poppies, too. It was a lot of fun seeing seeing everything come together.

Lisianthus is in the works! Wish I would have started it in December, but February 2 will have to do 🙃. Last year I tried growing it for the first time for my son’s wedding that we hosted outside at our home. It was beautiful! This year I’m growing 2 different colors and hoping it will be ready and available for my friend’s wedding in July. It’s a beautiful flower that is very versatile and lasts after it’s cut. It’s often used in bridal bouquets and corsages. I purchased my seeds from Johnny’s this year.

Nothing is more exciting on a gloomy day than getting your seed starting equipment ready. This year we are making our own seed starting mix: equal parts, pete moss, vermiculite, and perlite. We added a bag of worm castings just for fun. Our grow racks with heat and lights are almost ready to be turned on. We are organizing all of our fruit, vegetable, herb, and flower seeds into different baskets, according to which month they will be planted. We have updated our planting calendar, adding numerous varieties of flowers.
