As early voting approaches remember that if you vote a straight ticket you still have to go to the bottom and select other options like voting Norris for Coroner!
Remember the facts below:
Did you know that out of 92 counties in Indiana there are only 8 medical doctors that are elected coroners. The public of Vigo County have been convinced that we need a medical doctor in this position, if that was the case there would be more dr’s elected than 8. Did you know that as a tax payer when you elect a Doctor to this position they are getting paid $20,180 more per year! You read that right, 10’s of thousands of dollars more of your tax money. I ask of you to remember this fact when you vote for Travis Norris for coroner this November.
People in the community have asked me about the training that is needed to be Coroner and who performs autopsies. Here is what is in Indiana Code about Coroner’s training and who is required to conduct autopsies.
“The coroners training board established by IC 4-23-6. 5-3, in consultation with the Indiana law enforcement academy, shall create and offer a training course for coroners and deputy coroners. The training course must include:
(1) at least forty (40) hours of instruction; and
(2) instruction regarding:
(A) death investigation;
(B) crime scenes; and
(C) preservation of evidence at a crime scene for police and crime lab technicians.”
Continuing Education
“The coroners training board, in consultation with the Indiana law enforcement academy, shall create and offer an annual training course for coroners and deputy coroners. The annual training course must:
(1) include at least eight (8) hours of instruction; and
(2) cover recent developments in:
(A) death investigation;
(B) crime scenes; and
(C) preservation of evidence at a crime scene for police and crime lab technicians.”
Who is to do autopsies:
“The coroner shall employ a:
(1) physician certified by the American Board of Pathology; or
(2) pathology resident acting under the direct supervision of a physician certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology;
to perform the autopsy . . .”
As far at being able to conduct autopsies neither myself or my opponent are qualified to conduct autopsies and I would have the Vigo County Coroner’s Office continue to follow Indiana Law. The Coroner’s Office will have a Forensic Pathologist do all autopsies.
One aspect of the Coroners job is to take the findings from the Forensic Pathologist / Law Enforcement Agency when appropriate and make sure both entities findings corroborate the evidence from both parties so that the correct cause and manner of death is determined.
I ask that when your at the polls in the upcoming election that you vote Norris for coroner.
