Here’s a sunny serotonin bump while winter is having a late season tantrum of ice, snow and sub-freezing temps. As of this posting, we have very limited quantities of Paeonia daurica subsp. mlokosewitschii (aka Molly the witch) seedlings available but if you act fast you can be the envy of your fellow gardeners 😏

🎪A sucker is born every minute 🎪Let’s talk about herbaceous root suckering on grafted tree peonies! We graft tree peony scions onto herbaceous rootstock which gives it a great jumpstart, however the herbaceous rootstock can get a little too vigorous and start sending up shoots of it’s own. Although it may seem like you’re getting a two-fer, if left alone the herbaceous can decrease the vigor of your tree peony and lead to it’s decline. To protect your tree peony, you’ll want to cut the herbaceous shoots back until they stop coming up. The main differences between the herbaceous and tree peony shoots that you’ll be able to spot are: the leaf shape and texture (herbaceous leaves are more oval with smooth edges and a shinier texture, tree peony leaves have a more scissored edge and a matte leaf), the bud shape (herbaceous look like round gum balls, tree are more tear drop shaped), and the height of the new shoots (particularly with younger plants, if the shoot os taller than the whole plant, it is probably herbaceous rootstock). If you’re unsure whether it is new tree peony shoots or herbaceous suckering, wait until you are sure before cutting and always feel free to email us a picture for confirmation! To nip this problem in the bud (heh), plant any new, grafted plants with the graft union 3-4” below the soil line (we mark the proper depth with red tape when we send out our plants) because the deeper planting will help to discourage the herbaceous suckers! Check out these photos, can you tell who’s who?!

🎀Bloom report 🎀 As we finish up the month of May we have a little bit of everything blooming right now! The herbaceous peonies are getting started and some of the first blooms of the intersectional peonies have arrived as well. The last of the hybrid tree peony blossoms have withstood heat and heavy rain, just making sure you have a chance to see them so don’t delay! We are open to visitors 10-4 Tuesday-Saturday. It’s free to visit and we have a great selection of potted peonies to take home for your own . See you soon!

👾Dahlia sale!👾 Click the link in our bio and pick up some dahlias at 22% off, no code needed! Yes, of course, we gotta be present in the moment and enjoy the beautiful flowers of spring! But we also need to plan ahead, and you’ll thank yourself in October when much of the flower season has passed but your dahlias are still going bananas until the first frost. We have a lot of gorgeous varieties, Lilac Time is pictured here. You can dig, store and divide the tubers each year or plant them as annuals, we’ll never tell! 😏

The last ten days have seen the Chinese zhongyuan, rockii and Japanese tree peonies reach peak bloom. Its been a great year for tree peonies so far. While the heat of the last few days has hastened the end of the Chinese and Japanese cultivars, the hybrid tree peonies are just beginning and cool weather is in the forecast for the next week!

In order of appearance we have:
‘Blue Sea Green Waves’ 藍海綠波
‘Yao’s Yellow’ 姚黃
‘Multi-Colored Butterfly’ 花蝴蝶
‘Rose Scattered with Gold’ 玫瑰撒金
‘Naniwa Brocade’ 浪花錦
‘Amethyst Bunting’ this cultivar has a Chinese name that I need to find
‘Glory of the Sun and Moon’日月同輝
‘Murder of Crows’ 群烏
