Now, I ain’t saying I know everything about much of anything, but I do know this: if you’ve never stood in a holler at dusk and listened to the whip-poor-wills sing backup to a chorus of bullfrogs, you ain’t heard real music yet.

City folks call ‘em valleys, but that’s just their fancy way of saying “low place with soul.” As folks around these parts know, a holler is more than land, it’s a way of living. It’s where gossip echoes louder than thunder and where your cousin lives “just over yonder,” which could mean 200 feet or 12 miles depending on the curve of the creek.

A holler holds secrets, stories, and sometimes maybe even a little moonshine (strictly for medicinal purposes, of course, it makes a wonderful cold medicine). It’s where folks wave from their porches whether they know ya or not, and where time moves slower, not because the clock’s broke, but because nobody’s in a hurry to fix it.

Some say the world’s passing holler folk by. I say let it. Holler folks got everything they need right here: a porch and a peace that can’t be bought at no Walmart.

What say you?

✨ Today’s mosaic donation is from Billie June Richardson. Billie June says:
“The clear glass basket belonged to my mom’s sister June Craft (Rev Bill Craft). She loved it so much she wouldn’t throw it away even after it broke.
The sewing notions and other items belonged to Alice Ann Bradley. Ann was the much loved Home Ec agent for Letcher County for over 50 years.”

Billie June, thank you so much for your beautiful pieces and the kind note. I will definitely use these pieces! Thank you so much!
